New laptop

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I have no technical knowledge at all.  I really don't.  So please don't reply to this with "buy it with a portable RAM" or "Flux Capacitor" or anything like that.

I need a new laptop for playing Football Manager, Civilisation and some other games.  I will not be doing any work on this laptop and will try to avoid any sort of 'wrecking it' by keeping my current laptop for porn, music etc.

My girlfriend bought a new laptop a year ago and it was absolutely shite.  I tried FM on it when she got it and it was just dreadful.

When considering your answers I would quite like to have this laptop for a few years and don't want to have to buy a new one every time a new FM comes out.  My current laptop (purchased in 2011) gives me like 1.5/5 stars for Game speed and CPU performance even when I try to load up a game with one league and a small database.  I have to play offline as connecting to Steam etc seems to just crash my computer.

Budget...........well I don't have one really but I don't want to be spending £50000 or something.  Hoping to keep prices to about £300-£500.

You'll get something easily capable of playing strategy games for that money.

I know you're probably hoping for someone to point out an obvious ideal purchase, but it's really worth your while putting in a bit of research. Try to find out what the best processor and graphics chipset currently available in your price range is. Take your time. Check out reviews to see how easy your chosen model is to use, and what the build quality is like; the wife's laptop started physically falling apart before the year was out, and I get the blame for not looking it up (hey, the insides were alright, and that's all I cared about!)

Just got myself an HP Pavilion X2 10-N107na that I'm happy with, and that's what I did as I'm well out of the loop on modern tech. Best of luck!

Thanks Dave but not quite what I was looking for.

Check out the recommended specs for FM and look for something a little better. As BFTD said, you'll need to do a bit of research, read some reviews etc.

You shouldnt have any trouble finding something in that budget

Trust somebody to make an unhelpful, fatuous comment.

Clearly he wants to see the match engine, and will need a 48K Spectrum

Just bought this laptop from ebuyer as the motherboard on my Fujitsu Lifebook died. Seems like good spec for the money but I'll probably upgrade the ram as 4gb isn't a lot. Went for the one at the bottom, the HP 350 G2. Not entirely sure what the difference is with the two models listed. They look the same spec but I assume the 350 is a newer model. The 250 come preloaded with win10 whereas the 350 you get a free upgrade from 8.1 to 10. I might actually downgrade to 7 depending on how I get on with 10. I'll see how I go.

If you're still making up your mind, this one at top end of your budget but will probably be good for a few years of releases....

Asus is fine by the way. They made the first couple of tablets for Google. I've also had a netbook from them which was decent.

My wife's last Asus was shite; same chipset as my old netbook, but ran like a one-legged dug. Also, the case fell apart after the warranty expired. I bought a new case and transferred the parts over, only for that to fall apart after six months

You can never tell with manufacturers; one year's champions can be the next year's chumps, or vice versa.

Depends if it's a "value end" product. My own laptop is HP, kids have Lenovos, desktop is Lenovo and both my home servers are hp. On that basis I would generally recommend these two brands because I have no issues with them but there is a premium to pay for the badge, a bit like buying a car. Acer is the brand which covers swathe of el cheapo to high high end and their cheap models I would avoid like the plague.

But based on budget and what this fellow needs I stand by my recommendation for the Asus based on my experience with friends/relatives I found their kit solid, you're the first that I've heard of any major issues. Is your wife a bit rough, with handling of IT gear, not the other way you could take that! Panasonic tough book next time perhaps, built for the battlefield.
