Nutmeg: The Scottish Football Periodical

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Apologies for interrupting this forum but we think this is of interest to all Scottish football fans.

We're hoping to launch a Blizzard-like quarterly. A long-form, publication about Scottish football.

We're doing it without an agenda. Simply to give a platform to a different type of football writing, in a different format.

It would be around 200 pages and a cross between a book and a magazine.

And we're doing it because of our love of the game.

And you can help support what we're planning by pledging at Kickstarter to take out from 1 - 4 subscriptions or become a Nutmeg Patron:

If we don't reach our target, then you pay nothing.

Please help spread the word on Twitter and FB if you can.

We have till noon on April 3 to reach the target that will allow us it commission, print and distribute the launch issue.

Print media is a dead duck.

Best of luck though.

Not all forms of print media. The Blizzard is a perfect example of fans wanting a higher standard of journalism in a format that can be kept forever. They also do a digital version - something I'm sure Nutmeg will offer also.

Also, physical book sales at Waterstones e.g. rose 5% last year, with ebook sales dropping dramatically across the board.

So a U.S. opinion piece?

Waterstones have stopped selling ebook readers altogether because of "pitiful" sales in the U.K. I personally prefer the physical book, but there's definitely a happy medium to be found between the two. As I said before, the Blizzard has shown there is a market for football periodicals and one that specialises in Scottish football would definitely find a customer base.

You're right, all the sources you quoted were much better.

Books will always be around in some form, but they will go the way of the cassette and even CD's soon.

Can someone explain the Blizzard to me. I've never bought a copy so don't know if it's worth backing this new one or not.

Best explanation I've had so far is it's a cross between a book and a magazine with really long winding articles.

Is that fair?

Not taking the piss, if it sounds interesting I'll consider back/buying it. Though a publication full of 2,000 word articles and I would likely lose interest quickly.

2000 words isn't very much.

Definitely don't get the Blizzard in your case

Anything new in Scottish football media would have to prove to me first it really was different and not just the usual sycophantic Old Firm craps. Some of the names on that list don't have me reaching for my wallet.

The Blizzard have started offering free audio versions of past articles on iTunes which should give you an idea of what their content is like.

For me it can, at times, come across as being a bit pretentious but they still do have a lot of genuinely interesting articles on subjects that you will probably know very little about. The Daily Record it certainly is not!
