SPFL cup runner-up conspiracy

Recommended Posts

I posted on the top six thread but have decided this needs a thread of its own.

The SPFL seem to have changed the rules on the cup runner up entering Europe without any sort of notification or press conference and are actively trying to hide it

In 2013 Hibs were the runners up to Celtic and despite finishing 7th in the league qualified for europe as Scottish cup runners up as CEltic had qualified for the champions league

The 2013/14 european places announcement doesn't mention the the possibiliy of the Scottish cup runner up http://spfl.co.uk/news/article/european-places-for-201314-2012-08-17/

This season the SPFL website say this http://spfl.co.uk/europe/

* If the Scottish Cup is also won by the Premiership champions then the Scottish Cup berth will go to the Premiership runners-up and the fourth-placed club in the Premiership will also qualify for the Europa League.

This is a clear change to the rules

The 2014/15 page has been deleted from the SPFL website but an archived version says this https://web.archive.org/web/20150407020737/http://spfl.co.uk/spfl/europe-201415

In the event that the Scottish Cup winners have qualified for the Champions League, the Scottish Cup runners-up will qualify for the Europa League but will enter at qualifying round 1. If this happens, then the Scottish Premiership third place club will enter the Europa League at qualifying round 2.

So why was the page deleted and why were the rules changed when their is currently a moratorium on rule changes until this Summer. I wonder what Neil Doncaster has to say about this.

Didn't warrant a thread really

I think it does since if Celtic win the league/cup double the runner-up (potentially Utd, Hibs and ICT) wouldn't get a European place. Conversely this rule change gives Ross County, St Johnstone, Dundee a good chance of qualifying for Europe.

I think a secret rule change that has an effect on potential European qualification for 6 teams is worth a topic.

About time tbh

This. It's always been a bad idea that a team who has a good cup run but gets beaten in the final gets a crack at Europe ahead of a fourth place finisher in the league.

To reinforce this, United could potentially be runners up this season and be, deservedly, relegated.

Mind you, in theory we could win the cup, qualify for Europe and be relegated.

Did you not notice when Falkirk weren't in Europe this season?

Falkirk wouldn't have gotten into Europe under the old rules because ICT didn't qualify for the Champions League.

If I had paid closer attention to English football I would have realised Aston Villa didn't get into Europe this season...

I missed that UEFA changed the rules :oops I was too busy watching Motherwell almost collapse into oblivion last season and not reading Hibs vs Falkirk semi final previews.

Ok fair enough.  So the SPFL probably deleted the 2014/15 page because they used the wrong rules. So not a conspiracy just a little bit of incompetence.

Oh well.

Except they didn't. But even if they did, it wouldn't have made a difference because last year didn't present a scenario where the cup runners-up could have qualified for Europe, which you yourself have acknowledged.

I'm all for bashing the Scottish footballing authorities when it's deserved, but those genuine criticisms are weakened somewhat if they're also blamed for things they haven't done.
