I never understand the "unfair advantages" thing. There is no requirement for clubs to have grass pitches of a specified dimension - indeed they do not even need to be flat - nor does the grass have to be of a certain type or cut to certain lengths. Then you have the variables of how much watering they get given, what condition they're in (everything from mud-bath to dusty), how well they are maintained, how worn out they get depending on how many games are played on them, and so on.

In principle an artificial pitch is actually more consistent than all of that: they are subject to annual testing, there are only a set number of specifications and dimensions, and they don't materially change over the course of a season.

Of course artificial pitches are different from grass pitches, but grass pitches can wildly differ from each other and over time.

Nope. All grass pitches are exactly the same, with none having patches where the ball might run slower or faster or stick, and no divots or lumps that may cause strange bounces.

Any excuse to post this clip but there is a lot to be said for muddy pitches. Slater's last minute goal against Motherwell effectively saved Killie from the playoffs. Watch the bounce the ball takes from a divot just in front of the keeper!

Would never have happened on an artificial surface IMO. :)

Rangers boss Mark Warburton has called for artificial pitches to be banned in Scottish football's top flight after admitting Martyn Waghorn may miss the rest of the season through injury.

The player sustained knee ligament damage on Kilmarnock's plastic pitch during the Ibrox side's Scottish Cup win on Tuesday, expressing his belief that the surface was directly responsible for the damage sustained.

Warburton believes Scottish needs a better standard of playing surface to improve itself and attract a higher level of investment.

Not at the highest level," he said when asked whether artificial pitches have a place in the Scottish game.

"At the highest level to attract a better standard of investment, to provide a better product, would it not be better to have a better quality of grass pitch in the Premiership?

"Down south, how many clubs have artificial pitches out of 92? Why is it banned? Why is not used? Are clubs not in financial distress down south?"

Rangers released a statement concerning Waghorn's injury on Thursday, describing the Rugby Park pitch as "unforgiving."

Kilmarnock hit back at the claim, labelling the Ibrox side’s criticism of the artificial playing surface as "ill-informed."

The Ibrox boss made his view clear, adding: "There's no doubt in our mind from a coaching perspective and a medical perspective that his injury wouldn't have been of this nature had it not been for the pitch.

"So Martyn Waghorn left that pitch with lacerations and immediate bruising. There's no doubt about that so when we use the term 'unforgiving' we meant in terms of the hard aspect of the pitch.

"He wouldn't have had the same nature of injury that he has now. He's had a scan which tells you we've looked inside the knee but the fact of the matter is he came off that pitch and our player had lacerations and immediate bruising."

Gtf Mark.

^^^^^

Hasn't been to Gayfield recently.

He's speaking shite anyway, part time players that are self employed in a manual job are risking their livelihood every time they play, even the ones wit permanent work won't get the same pay if they're unable to work for any length of time.

You were arguing against synthetic pitches earlier in this thread, now Warburton does it and your stance seems to be changing. Why is that?

I think games are totally different on plastic pitches, more sticky and unpredictable, ruins games a bit at times. Would prefer it if clubs could just invested jn keeping their pitches in a semi decent state, which would surely be a much lower expense.

Grass > plastic always.

Eta: surely people that play on them here feel the difference to their bodies after playing a competitive game on plastic too? Like a tin man for days. Joints take a beating.

Whatever you say.

"rangers boss Mark Warburton" is a snivelling wee lassie that throws his toys out the pram when things don't go his way and has no respect for any other clubs.

Glasgow rugby played on it no long ago. GTF if it was that bad theyd all be in hospital.

Glasgow played on it last night for the 2nd or 3rd time this season and the Scottish rugby team have played a full international on the pitch in the past.
