Dawson Park Boy
Presume it’ll be taken off the council tax thus reducing the amount to be paid. The other bonus will be it’ll help to reduce the amounts outstanding (quite substantial, I believe).

It does sound like she's been given the bullet. Seems odd timing though. I know Sadiq Khan hasn't been happy with her, but he doesn't have the power to sack her and I certainly can't imagine Priti Patel sacking her to appease Khan. Edit: interesting - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-60340525 Reads that Khan has binned her, which he doesn't have the power to do. Must've be very persuasive. CaspianChris
Came across this. Perfectly sums up Rees-Mogg anytime I have had the misfortune to hear him speak. He is the worst and the quicker he is voted out by his constituents the better. Especially as it is therefore one less Tory seat.

Billy Jean King
LAs have just completed a similar scheme that paid £130 to every household on Council Tax Reduction or certain CT exemptions. It was known as the LIPP (low income pandemic payment). All those that qualified were sent correspondence offering them £130 by BACS payment and failure to respond saw the money credited to the Council Tax account. It was amazing how many simply ignored the offer of free cash and the £130 simply either reduced arrears or created a credit that will be rolled forward to reduce the new years C Tax. I expect LAs will simply use the methods put in place for that scheme for this new one. The SG seem big on the public not actually having to apply for these hand outs, the onus is on the LAs to simply identify those who qualify and pay it with the minimum of fuss / publicity. Given the timing of the announcement there is no way the payments will be made in time to be reflected in the new years C Tax Bill's if that's the route taken. These schemes simply cannot be means tested. The amount being paid automatically makes that a non starter financially. Lowest bands coupled with CTR recipients in the higher bands is a reasonable compromise but yes some folk not in dire need will benefit in the bands A to D. I suppose it's no different to pensioners cold weather payments - same principles apply re means testing those too.

Bairnardo
The news about Macron making a big deal over not giving the Russians his DNA via a Covid, then it emerging that Liz Truss fell right into Vlads trap is the least surprising ever. The prospect of Russia using her DNA to make an idiot bomb is terrifying.
