I have resigned from the Scottish Green Party. My resignation letter can be read here and is outlined below.

Lorna Slater & Patrick Harvie MSP
Co-Leaders
Scottish Green Party
19b Graham Street
EDINBURGH
EH6 5QN

cc. Membership Secretary 18 December 2020

Dear Patrick and Lorna,

I am writing to tender my resignation from the Scottish Green Party with effect from Friday 18 December 2020.

For some time now, since I was admonished for attending a public meeting at Edinburgh University in June 2019, I have been saddened by the intolerance shown by some party members to an open and mature dialogue about the tensions and conflicts around questions of sex and gender in the context of transgender rights and women’s rights.

On Thursday last week it was made clear to me that if (as I was minded to), I voted for amendment 28 to the Forensic Medical Services (Victims of Sexual Offences) (Scotland) Bill, I would face complaints and disciplinary action leading to possible suspension, deselection or expulsion. On the evidence of the reaction to my attendance at the June 2019 public meeting, I took this prospect seriously.

I understand that the Scottish Green Party has a strong commitment to equalities and trans rights. However, some of the language, approaches and postures of the party and its spokespeople have been provocative, alienating and confrontational for many women and men.

It has become evident to me that the sort of open-minded public engagement I would like to see take place on this topic is incompatible with a party that has become very censorious of any deviation from an agreed line.

Put simply, I cannot operate in this kind of environment and Thursday’s vote and the discussions that took place around it were the final confirmation of that.

I remain committed to Green politics and will endeavour to work constructively with the Green Group in Parliament until dissolution. I also have important work to do on tenants’ rights, the climate crisis, land reform, local democracy and taking forward my European Charter of Local Self-Government (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill.

I wish you well in the May 2021 Elections.

Best wishes

Andy

This seems like a good thing. Wonder how you apply to it?

It’s an urban version of Community Right to Buy. You need to form a community body that has a qualifying interest in the land ie people who live nearby - it only needs a small number of people, 8 rings a bell. It needs to be a legal entity. You then need to prove the land is vacant and derelict and that you have shown willingness to approach the landowner. If ultimately they are being dicks you can eventually forcibly acquire the land at market value.

I’ve looked at this for a site in Glasgow that is blighting our immediate amenity and it is quite difficult to get off the ground, particularly when so many flats are rented and you don’t know who actually owns them. Guidance as below was current a few months ago but it is a new and emerging area.

There's a particular site nearby that gets a lot of criticism on nextdoor for being a big ruin that's a  beacon for  neds, I believe it's owned by some property development company that's been dragging it's feet over redeveloping it. Wouldn't be surprised if it mysteriously goes on fire at some point. A buyout would be good to organise, I'll give it some thought.

‘S e do bheatha a Charaid!

Our place is owned by a local hotelier and it is unsightly and prone to fly tipping. It’s small but a blight on the lane (back court Glasgow tenement). He put heras fences up and was hugely proprietorial. I’d love to get it up him by forcibly acquiring it and there is a lot of goodwill towards the idea amongst the home owners I’ve talked to  but it’ll probably need someone to drive it and my skills are more strategy then leadership.

Unsire if it has been posted elsewhere but just read that the trial of the lorry drivers with the 39 deaths was postponed briefly because of a tweet from Priti Patel.

The home secretary not knowing she cant be tweeting about a live trial.

Fucking hell.

Patel is completely untouchable now. A woman who can do or say absolutely anything without the fear of losing her job or influence.

She's a fucking proven traitor, and the good Tories of Witham re-elected her. They should hang their heads in shame. Their was a time when a political party affiliation for an MP tended to mean that they had different views on how best to serve the public. Now, Tories are simply screwing the country for every fucking penny before it collapse in its entirety, and they sail off to spend more time with their money.

Get Indy sorted, ffs - my Birth certificate is one of the few things giveing me hope for the future.

No, im genuinely just wondering why you want him sacked? Ive not been following news today etc so may have missed something?

My fault I can be too facetious.  At no point did I say I want him sacked, I was simply seeking clarification on a point.
