Literally could not give less of a shit over how statesmanlike someone comes across. The press give way too much leeway to people like Thatcher, Blair and Obama who oversaw quite abhorrent policies purely because they were viewed as credible heads of state or leaders. Utter bollocks.

I believe the 8th amendment will be repealed by popular vote end May

It will be interesting to see if it's repealed or amended.  The ROI has made massive strides forward in social policy in recent years and I hope it will continue on this issue.  The influence of the Catholic Church is still pernicious.

I strongly believe this yet we are shackled to a bigger country who is pulling us out of EU against our democratic will. Scotland the Brave, embarrassing

Aye that's pish.  Though tbf with the level of utter propaganda rammed down our throats for years and the hysterica of that campaign, I'm still quite proud that most scots didn't swallow it and voted yes.

Michael "Lord" Levy on CNN saying that if you oppose the state of Israel then you are an anti-Semite.  Where will the front page spreads be decrying this appalling statement by an unaccountable member of the U.K. legislature?

At least he is consistent, albeit consistently wrong.  This is an article from 2016 where he states basically the same thing.

Quote

The Labour peer Lord Levy told the BBC's Newsnight: "There can be criticism of the state of Israel, but anti-Semitism - using the word 'Zionist' as another form of anti-Semitism - frankly can no longer be tolerated."

It hasn't a lot of influence as far as I can see - people still go to mass, more for the social aspect and/or out of habit rather than to listen to what way the hierarchy want them to vote. There have been unrelenting scandals regarding clerical sex abuse, mother and baby homes etc which have totally destroyed their hold over the population.

As an aside, I was chatting with some folk about the lack of proper statesmen-like politicians across the board.

20 years ago, all the major parties had a few that you could reasonably say you could trust to run the country, regardless of whether you agreed with their politics.

Which of the current mob could you honestly describe in the same way?

No they didn't

It's a consequence of the gradual shift to the right in the overall make-up in UK politics.....and some would say, in society in UK in general.

These insiduous campaigns to stifle debate by decrying anyone who disagrees with this right-wing takeover as an extremist, are growing in number.

I've no time for Corbyn. I blame him for the shambles of Brexit as much as I blame Johnston and the rest of them, but I feel that this right-wing character assasination......firstly over Russia, now over 'anti-semitism'.....is a dangerous vision into the UK of the future.

Is this how things will be ? Trial by the right-wing press, and complicite silence from the Tories who are hostages to the fanatics within their own ranks ?

It seems so.

Yeah I have no love for Corbyn either but it is an attack on anyone who is seen as challenging the establishment and that’s why anyone interested in progressive politics should be concerned.

Folk need to recall Niemoller’s words and logic.
