The DWP merely administers the schemes per the regulations laid by government.

Right enough, they're only obeying orders.

Cherry, Swinson, Rowling... You might be onto something there...

Been a while since I've seen Jo Swinson referred to as a "powerful woman".

Even then, it was by herself.

I was responding specifically about the 5 week wait. That isn't DWP dragging heels, that's the legislation as it stands. I deal with the DWP ICT systems on a daily basis and they are a total joke, I'm in no way going to stand here and defend them but on that particular point I was responding too (the delay between UC applications and payment) that's not down to DWP dithering, it's how the system is intended to work which as folk are rightly stating is a disgrace.

I know, I was just enjoying a deeply petty attempt at equating the DWP with the Nazis  :P

If I’m two pints deep or just off dealing with them I’d happily agree. All the defences are the same.

One of our more amusing right-wing posters used to posit that, if enough workers are willing to administer the government's sickening procedures, then it's all perfectly fine as The People have spoken on the issue.

Don't remember anyone bringing up the Nuremberg Trials at the time, but I rather wish they had.

In an answer to Caroline Lucas (questioning why the industry is paying no tax at the moment, indeed receiving tax breaks for decommissioning)at Treasury questions, the financial secretary to the Treasury stated that oil and gas tax receipts, have to date exceeded £375bn.
Oh to have an oil fund.

£9 billion written off on defective / overpriced PPE.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jan/24/minister-resigns-in-protest-at-handling-of-fraudulent-covid-loans

£4.3 billion lost due to lack of oversight on furlough payments.

https://www.ft.com/content/281c9847-f76b-4def-a908-03b3d664feb3

£4.2 billion lost on sell-off of military housing.

So there we have it, in the last week the govt. announces £17.5 billion of public money lost to the Exchequer due to a possible mixture of incompetence / corruption / ideology.

No wonder this country is in the f*cking toilet.

That bit was down to Tobermory train man Michael Portillo.

P.S. Bit about the man who ended up owning it.

Taxpayers Alliance seem to be awfully quiet on this. Odd that.

However suggest giving ordinary public sector workers a pay rise to match the cost of living and...

I know we are used to politicians having an interesting relationship with facts, but earlier on there was a Tory MP on 5Live claiming that even before BoJo mentioned it in the Commons earlier this week, the main focus of the people in her constituency was Starmer not prosecuting Jimmy Savile.

Wow.

I can't recall her name, but presumably she is the Honourable Member for Pluto North East.

It's something that virtually nobody outwith very online QAnon types had the slightest clue about until Johnson's zinger on Monday.

Starmer did a lot of shady shit in his previous jobs that deserves to be called out, but trying to pin the Savile stuff on him is laughably desperate, even by Johnson's standards.

edit -  it appears the Grimsby MP has long history of being wired to the moon.

Could this have anything to do with it?

The cost of living is only going to get worse over the next few years. You only have to see how a lot of phone/mobile/internet suppliers now say that the contract cost will increase every year by CPI + 3.9%, so it's obvious that businesses are going to screw all of us with huge above inflation price rises in the coming years. The knock on effect of these type of price rises could have a big impact on inflation, but it would appear that nobody in power really gives a toss though.

"While the Conservatives attack public protections, genuine red tape – that is, pointless form-filling and officialdom – has boomed. A central feature of the neoliberal revolution that brought Boris Johnson to power is a proliferation of corporate and governmental bureaucracy: new barriers to obtaining public services, an impenetrable thicket of train franchises and test-and-trace companies, the life-consuming nightmare afflicting people stuck in unsellable flats clad in flammable materials, the paperwork in which importers and exporters are now drowning, the endless queues at Dover. As a paper in the journal Safety Science shows, deregulation causes chaos, and chaos causes bureaucratic overload. Far from liberating the nation from red tape, government assaults on public protection tie us up in knots."

This sort of stuff all fits a pattern.  Until fairly recently Grimsby was geographically and politically an unremarkable outpost but it has long been actively promoted by the right as a typical struggling Northern community which is held in contempt by the liberal left-wing elite, and I've now lost count of the times the BBC in particular to carry out vox pops amongst the populace.  Unsurprisingly the area voted heavily for Brexit and returned this Tory bampot to Westminster.  God help them.

Zero sympathy for Starmer and the sensibles when it comes to Saville and other right wing conspiracy theories.. They were perfectly happy with the stuff being flung at Corbyn and some even joined in themselves.

The genie left the bottle years ago and it's not going back in.
