Helen Liddell, the woman who once slavishly trooped after her then boss Robert Maxwell into a gents toilet.  Good to see that like many of her erstwhile Labour colleagues she is still upholding her socialist principles.

Writer, Michael Crick, who has written a book on Farage, has just said on the Politics Live show, that Farage has been "The greatest political communicator of a generation - even greater than Boris Johnson"   Wow!

Obviously this guy's trying to sell his book, but a statement like that would certainly put me off buying.

He just forgot to mention that every single piece of 'communication' from both of these charlatans is a lie.

The impression I get when politicians are being interviewed is 'I know this is shit and I know you know this is shit, but it's not you I'm trying to convince ' This is particularly noticeable with Farage and Johnson.

That's true.

I spend a lot of time these days listening to radio phone in programmes. One thing I do seem to notice is that all those who call in to extol the virtues of Brexit, and to point out what a good job BoJo (and Farage) did in delivering, generally sound as thick as pigshit.

Big 'let's give these a trial run against refugees before we set them loose on protestors' vibe here.

Im loathe to give him too much credit but cant help but think of the black mirror episode, from creative visionary Charlie "WOT IF YOUR MAM WAS A COMPUTER" Brooker.

The robodogs used in the uk meanwhile probably arent going to go rampant skynet style, but will instead be used to give destitute tenants in hovels 5 seconds to comply with their orders while screeching in a synthetic voice about a high court writ. Cant pay we'll take it away being filmed from the viewpoint of a terrifying killing machine controlled by some gammon bailiff is a logical next step in reality tv.

BBC News reporting this morning that Anna Firth has "won" the Southend West By Election for the Tories. Given that none of the mainstream parties fielded candidates for this one, and that there were more spoiled ballot papers than there were votes for Ms Firth, "won" hardly seems an appropriate description for this result.

Zero sympathy for Starmer and the sensibles when it comes to Saville and other right wing conspiracy theories.. They were perfectly happy with the stuff being flung at Corbyn and some even joined in themselves.

The genie left the bottle years ago and it's not going back in.

To be fair on that sort of thing (as was used in the US by the far right) at least the right wing nutterocity here haven't started with the 'people are saying that *Starmer/ *Sturgeon/ *the Unions/ *the mainstream media are organising baby eating and pa#do#phil#a rings in the basement of a pizza restaurant' stuff.

Well, not yet anyway - then BoJo starts with his 'Starmer didn't prosecute Savile' sort of pish...

Missed that one, thanks for reposting.

Might also have been interesting to see similar polls conducted on the education levels of those who voted in both the 2014 and 2016 referendums.

The Governor of the Bank of England gave the game away over inflation with his comments about wage restraint.

What we are going to be experiencing for the next few years is shock therapy to lower everyone's living standards coordinated by the asset management firms that control the economy.

From a YouGov article about the EU Referendum,

Quote

The most dramatic split is along the lines of education. 70% of voters whose educational attainment is only GCSE or lower voted to Leave, while 68% of voters with a university degree voted to Remain in the EU. Those with A levels and no degree were evenly split, 50% to 50%

About the 2014 referendum, I found this on the BBC

Hmmmm............................I think we might be heading in that direction......................

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/feb/05/far-right-celebrates-after-johnson-repeats-savile-slur-in-parliament

"Johnson’s repeating of the Savile slur was celebrated instantly by the extreme right, with CCDH recording that posts on rightwing channels on the messaging app Telegram had attracted 42,521 views in the two days after Johnson made the remark."

So Amnesty claiming that Palestine is an Apatheid State, who’d have thunk it?

Spoiler

Only everyone who has paid any attention since its creation I suppose.

Possibly another example of one sector that was able to use the pandemic to its advantage.

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2022/feb/06/labour-seeks-inquiry-into-huge-jump-in-top-grade-a-levels-at-private-schools

Quote

In one case of alleged grade inflation, Derby high school went from 6.5% of its entries awarded A* by examination in 2019 to nearly 54% awarded by assessment in 2021. North London Collegiate, a private girls school, nearly trebled the rate of A*s awarded so that more than 90% of its entries were assessed as A*s.

£150 cost of living payments for Scottish households - BBC News

OK so this isn't ideal but it's better than nothing.

A better solution would be to base it on your earnings rather than the size of your house. Fewer people should be receiving it, allowing for more to be given  to those who are in desperate need. I'm assuming this would have taken too long, would have been too expensive to do or maybe fell out-with the powers of Holyrood to do properly though.

Some people will get this who don't need it and others who do need it will miss out entirely but at least it's something positive in the short term.

A longer term solution has to be to target the oil and has companies needlessly creaming an absolute fortune out of the situation.

Yeah it's an emergency measure effectively so putting in place a framework to administrate it as you suggest would be time-consuming and expensive. CT Banding isn't ideal, but it should capture most of those who need it. Obviously there will be anomalies - eg we're in a new build, but it's a Band A so we'll qualify, which feels a bit weird as I'm on a good salary, however my partner is disabled so it'll help in any case.

ETA: There are other funds out there which I believe have come ultimately from the SG to help those most in need, eg DFIF and Tenant's Grants. Those have been a great resource for us to help vulnerable folk in the last few months
