Normal thing for a nominally progressive politician to say

Not only sexual perverts, but also inveterate liars. Clearly not prejudiced, though.

Starting to develop my own prejudice against powerful middle-aged women called Jo, TBH.

Putting money into the wrong people's pockets is what has brought us here.  There is no doubt that the effect of QE is about to be felt and all so that people that already had, got a little more.

It's funny (it's not) to see those that claim they are left wing posting about how their pension have risen by double-digit growth.  Yip, no downsides to asset bubbles at all.

Those that claim pumping vast sums of money into the financial system could be undertaken without inflation obviously went to the "end of boom and bust" lectures from Gordon Brown.

The fascination that we have with owning property which is central to so many policy decisions is a weight around the neck of the country and especially the "have nots"

Not convinced that this is a money supply problem. It does look very like a demand-pull episode where people just want more stuff than is available, partly (mainly) due to undercapacity from covid.

I agree that the monetary stimulus was stupidly and corruptly targeted on asset owners and something like helicopter money would have been better.

Unless there are hugely increased  fiscal transfers to the less well off, and i don't even mean poor, higher interest rates are going to hurt like f**k.

If there was ever a time for a wealth tax it's now.

his own politics may not be great but Hislop is so good in these situations, just doesn't give a shit. Has them acting like little kids after a few minutes, Costa looks a complete idiot

I liked the Chairman, "I think we should leave it there because I'm not sure what you might have on me."

BBC News - Universal Credit: Jobseekers must widen job search more quickly
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60149016

On the face of it classic Tory going to Tory stuff but the fact the Scarecrow announced yesterday at PMQs that today would see the launch of a major new policy intended to get more folk into work is simply disingenuous shite. It's another benefit cut plain and simple.

I posted last week jokingly  that they would go after those on benefits and asylum seekers to get the gammonati raging to change the headlines around bojo but sadly it looks like happening

Given that it can take 5 or 6 weeks to get your first payment from Universal Credit, that means you could could be getting sanctions before you've even received your first payment. You really couldn't make it up.

Beginning to think David Frost might be one of the people behind all these No 10 leaks.

Quote

There are now just two viable options if the party is to bounce back. The first is for Boris Johnson to remain in office, attempt to fix the immediate damage caused by Partygate, and then recant his worst policies and delegate huge amounts of power to a David Frost-like CEO in No 10.
We would need the old Boris back: he would have to ditch the National Insurance increase, embrace a freeze on public spending and accept major shifts to his green agenda. There would need to be a clear-out of the Cabinet as well as advisers, with all the neo-socialists, green fanatics and pro-woke crowd exiting immediately.

Every policy would need to be judged on whether it makes Brexit Britain more competitive, and/or by how it improves the lives, and addresses the fears, of culturally conservative and aspirational Britain.

The aim would be to ruthlessly target the 43.6 per cent of the electorate who voted Tory in 2019, but by following the broadly conservative approach these voters expected, rather than the weird blend of reheated neo-Brownite social democracy and green paternalism that was unleashed upon them instead.

Crucially, the about-turn I’m describing is not about lobbing a few shreds of “red meat” to a starving base, penning random “Right-wing” tweets announcing a policy that unravels within hours, or even replacing a few figures in No 10 or Whitehall. No, only a total reset will do.

The second option, regrettably, would be for Johnson to step down and be replaced by somebody who follows an improved version of the 2019 strategy. This individual would need to grip a machinery of state recaptured by the Blob – and even more so now civil servants have been tasked with potentially terminating the careers of elected politicians.

He or she would then need to impose, at great speed, an agenda that fuses pro-capitalist reforms while appealing to suburban cultural conservatives with a tough agenda on crime, human rights, wokery, Brexit and much else besides.

The DWP merely administers the schemes per the regulations laid by government.

They've only kept on the psychos who relish every sanction though.

As someone who's had to deal with them as a "customer" and as a fellow civil servant, yup. A department that takes its administration from a Kafka novel and is staffed with an alarming number of people who view the people they deal with as subhuman.
