Except housing regulations have broadly been degraded across the UK, not enhanced.

Not from a Building Standards position in  Scotland.  Far greater regulations/requirements in things like insulation values, heating standards and solar panel requirements for new build.  And new build in the last 30-40 years must make up a fair chunk of housing stock.

There is an argument to be made the supply too.

Most new housing developments around Edinburgh seem to be "luxury 3 to 4 bedroom " houses costing upwards of 200k.

Apart from the Council ordered social housing renovation of Niddrie there's not much of new 1-2 bedroom housing around. Plus buy to let cnuts hoover the older stock up to rent it to bloody students.

You mean there's actually anything left to rent to students after the AirBnB landlords have had their fill?

Data a year old now, and things might have changed a bit due to covid, but christ on a bike...

There’s validity in the point but it’s a bit misleading.  You need to factor in the quality and size of houses, facilities, quality of construction, thermal efficiency, etc.  None of these are covered by a simple comparison.

BTW I’m not disputing the difficulty of people getting on the housing ladder due to price increases.

first thought was London & South East housing bubble skewing the average perhaps, would take a guess that multiple graphs would be more insightful (one for the UK as a whole as per the one provided there, one for the UK excluding all the London boroughs etc., and one for averages solely in all the London boroughs etc.)

edit: amusingly going solely by Trainspotting renting in London was still pretty bloody expensive in the 90's, sure there's a bit where he's on the phone quoting £400 - £500 a week for the 1 or 2 bedroom studio flat that Sick Boy and Begbie start squatting in!)

that aside I'd be curious to see some kind of aggregate monthly rental cost on the graph provided too for all types of 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom etc. properties and what proportion of income that takes up...

The civil servant who was going to an employment tribunal claiming unfair dismissal due to Patel’s bullying has received a substantial settlement.

I’m sure the Scottish Tories who keep going on about the costs awarded to Salmond will be equally outraged about this.

In fairness they’ve shot up in the polls from 5% to 7%.

Of course that’s ignoring the fact the were at 9% about 7 weeks ago.

There was an Express article going about that claimed the Farage Party are going to pick up enough seats to stop the pro-independence parties getting a majority. Apparently they're experiencing unprecedented popularity in Scotland.

Similar to that UKIP walloper who was claiming he'd taken Falkirk, before losing his deposit with about a thousand votes.

Sad to see some posters continuing to try and shoehorn Rangers into the politics threads.

You don't understand how conscious I was when posting this that someone would make this point.

To be the pendatic arsehole that I am, it's the general politics, would never have dreamed of going near the Indy threads with this one.

Huge politics news overnight as Farage retires again and Laurence Fox announces he's running for Mayor of London on an anti-"extreme political correctness" platform.
And we took the piss out of America for Trump.
That fox guy is clearly a bell-end with his political correctness... But his views on lockdown restrictions would go down a storm with those who regularly frequent the p&b Coronavirus thread.
