My dad hasn't been in great health over the last few months and I asked my mum when he can retire. She said he reckons 10K more will be enough. I suggested they sell their house to one of those companies who let you stay until you die. Her response was that they'd have nothing to leave us. The house will be worth about 60-80K. I said I'd rather dad could get retired early than expect a handout when they die. Absolutely, i just want them to enjoy their life, the only thing I want to inherit is the photo album.
BFTD
Wow, does that mean poverty does actually exist? Huge if true.

Some of the happiest and most content people on the planet are those who have zero material possessions. Too many people in our society buy things they can’t afford to impress people they don’t even like. I blame Thatcher and the Tory policies of the 80s for the greed is good ideology.
SuperSaints1877
Regarding inheritance I heard a good story about a financial adviser meeting up with one of his clients who was 80 and turned up in a brand new top of the range Porsche. He asked him why he bought this car. The auld guy said “well when I die my son will only go out and buy this, so I thought I might as well get a shot first”. Maybe we need an “inheritance tax” and a “when I die” thread.

Most would surely sell them to pay off their own mortgage, thus both returning the house to the pool of available housing, and freeing up money for them to re-invest in the economy? Go and take a look at how many modest homes in newbuild estates are rental properties.

But who owns them? Is it the children who inherited the house? Or have they sold it and it's been bought by an organisation to rent out? If it's the latter then it's a very different problem.

There's also a shit tonne of evidence that the middle classes are the worst for reinvesting money back into the economy Edited June 25, 2022 by invergowrie arab
invergowrie arab
Genuinely the worst thing about Scotland is the cognitive dissonance of every single person wearing their big 'I hate Tories" badge and describing themselves as socialists whilst having bought wholesale into the myth of hard work, the feckless and whats mine is mine.

This about sums it up. When push comes to shove 99% of posters on here are exactly what they claim to despise. Been amusing watching it unfold.

Isn’t it some kind of scam where “affordable” means a percentage of the most expensive rather than actually cheap?

Pretty sure that is a scam some builders used a few years back. There isn’t really a strict definition of affordable so builders take the piss to make more money. Fully supported by the in-built snobbery of the people buying the expensive homes of course. Years back when a mate of mine left the army he was moved to a newly built rental house in Wraysbury in Berkshire. Fairly small new build estate and the housing assocation rented about half a dozen of the homes out. There were residents campaigns and all sorts in the village to keep these scum out. Not just the existing villagers. People that had bought houses in the new estate.

Its clear from the articles above that the builders are both absolutely at it, and much more capable of throwing money at the issue to get their own way than the LA's. The LA's must be somewhat complicit too though. The money they will be raking in from the high tax band new builds getting thrown up must be mental. Surely they could take a tougher line re planning permission.
