GNU_Linux
Where are the best wee independent record stores? I am in Lanarkshire and Glasgow. For Glasgow theres Mono, Lovemusic & Missing. There's probably some stuff in the West End but I'm not boughy enough to know the area too well.
GrahamJags
Where are the best wee independent record stores? I am in Lanarkshire and Glasgow. Monorail is fantastic, Love Music is decent as well. Some Great Reward in the south side has a fairly limited collection but is a cafe as well so you can grab a coffee while you browse. I’ve heard good things about Mixed Up Records near Kelvinbridge as well, but haven’t been in yet.
BallochSonsFan
Not a huge fan of Monorail. It's good but could be a lot better. The staff are complete arseholes. Indier than thou types who give music fans a bad name. They can also be a little bit inconsistent with their stock. Their choice of stuff can miss out some great indie albums. My favourite record store in Scotland is Assai. The staff are fantastic. Big Andy is a great guy, although tends to work in the distribution office these days rather than the shop. My one criticism is that they carry too much pop. I'd prefer bigger specialist sections (definitely more Americana) and more indie/alternative stuff. If I'm visiting family near Newcastle then I love a trip into Reflex Records. It's a real shame that we don't have a Rough Trade. I think there would be a market for a Rough Trade style shop. Would be good to see them expand into cities with a healthy music scene.

Find a record you want to buy. Think of a price you would expect to pay for it. Now add £4. You've reached Assai.
D.A.F.C
Was thinking about all the old record shops that used to be around in the 90s. Could easily spend an entire day looking around them. Fife Sleeves Kirkcaldy, DJ zbd’s shop. Really good for tickets and the shop that started shoop records. Most wanted Dunfermline, decent shop but the guys were a bit arsey. Dj’s from moist rosyth Also had 3rd base for second hand and there was a good shop near the glen that I’ve forgotten the name of. Guy would order in anything for you. Edinburgh coda, more commercial but decent. Located near the usc clothes shop back when Waverley market was decent. Vinyl villains, Leith walk. Second hand stuff, think it’s still on the go. Sounds records, think it was above schuh, princes street. Virgin/HMV, virgin had a great downstairs section with sega and Nintendo’s setup as well. HMV was at st James centre then moved. Fopp, Cockburn street was originally on the rhs then moved across the road to two floors and now in rose street. Woman that worked there was identical to the ‘let’s rock” Mexican actress in aliens. 23 precinct, Glasgow store moved to basement of 031 clothing up the bridges then into old fopp store for a bit. Underground solution. Originally in the basement of whiplash trash in Cockburn street then moved down the road. Ran by Ritchie rufftone dmc world champ. drastic plastic, up st Mary’s place off royal mile, started in leith walk. Probably my favourite shop, arcade machine and could smoke weed there pretty much if you wanted. global records, Dalry road. Would usually start the tour here from haymarket. Very good shop ran by DJ dell who also ran the Calton studio nights. Again usually folk smoking joints. glasgow didnt seem as good as Edinburgh but had 23 precinct, ran for 50 years and was excellent. Would have used it much more if I’d stayed closer to weegieland. Limbo records and 23rd precinct were good as well. tower records, massive store had everything. Only went there a few times. tbh pretty much every town had a decent record shop. Real shame this has all ended and things like Spotify are all youngsters need to find music.
BFTD
For the folk who buy new vinyl - is it standard to receive a download link for a digital copy of the record, or just an occasional addition that's sometimes thrown in?

Also gives you a choice of digital format besides mp3 only.

It isn't standard but it's more usual than not. Was pissed off that neither Neil Young nor Margo Price had a download code in their most recent album releases.

I did just discover that Mr Bungle have a "new" album available through them, though. Ooh.
Oscar Wilder
Listen in Glasgow was superb, Big John from the Exploited worked there for a while! You could buy photos from nearly every Apollo gig there a couple of days after they happened, think it was Harry P who took them, got the full Clash set from the July 78 gig wae Joe with his Get To f**k, t shirt on!Speed records in Ayr was good too, then latterly Up records! They were a b*****d for finding any excuse not to exchange a record which jumped all over the place.

Chalmers & Joy, 23rd Precinct, the interesting smell of Rockpile and of course the mighty Grouchos which if the rumours locally are true has sadly joined the first 3 at the great record fair in the sky.
BallochSonsFan
Grouchos might have been great in the past but in the past few years it seems to have gone downhill. Any time I was in it they had a terrible selection of stock. The building needed some serious attention too.
BallochSonsFan
Is Europa in Stirling any good? Was in it once and wasn't overly impressed, but I think I might just have been in on a bad day. Stirling is handy enough if I'm bored on a Saturday morning and fancy killing some time.

It used to be pretty good back in the day and a decent portion of the vinyl I own was bought there prior to online shopping becoming as big a thing. Probably about 15-20 years since I was last in Europa though.

There was a period of time where they did a nice line in under-the-counter unrated import DVDs (no, not those kind of DVDs). The Oxfam round the corner on Maxwell Place looks like it has a vinyl section worth perusing. Unusual for a charity shop. Most of them end up with stacks of James Last and Mantovani LPs.
BallochSonsFan
I managed to pick up a few albums in Europa. Not what I desperately wanted so I suspect that the new releases I want will need to be online orders. No word yet on the big VIP collector fair in Glasgow in October. Doubt it'll happen given the likely restriction on numbers. Clashes with my monthly trip to Perth too so I'd probably have given it a miss even if it was going ahead. I've resisted the urge to start on Discogs but I may need to succumb to the temptation.

I set up a Wantslist and get an email every day with anything from it that has been newly listed. I've bided my time on some releases and got some real bargains by waiting....still spent a fcking fortune though!
Jimi Shandrix
Grouchos may be gone but the staff have opened a new shop this very morning,13 Records at 13 Union Street in Dundee. Was in this morning. The racks aren't full yet but it's looking great with a lot of good stuff.
