Vinyl - anyone still buy it?

So, vinyl appears to be making a comeback - how many people are still collecting it or have started buying it again?? I got an old school stereo system free from gumtree, and have been picking up some second hand stuff, mainly from charity shops. The charity shops around the Nicholson street area of Edinburgh are absolute treasure troves. The wife is getting me some new LP's for xmas, Along with a new crossley turntable.

I had been toying with the idea of buying a turntable, amp and speakers for a few years but put off by cost of vinyl. About a month ago I came into some money and bit the bullet. I popped into Loud and Clear on Sauchiehall St "just for a look" I told myself....ha!

I had been looking at Rega turntables and liked the look of them, the reviews were good. So when I was approached by one of the sales guys I mentioned I quite liked them and other than that had no idea what else would go with it. He asked if I would like to hear it in action and suggested I pick a couple of albums to try it out. I flicked through a vast pile of vinyl picking Tom Waits' My Blue Valentine, Love and Money's Strange Kind of Love and Led Zeppelin 1. Within about 10 seconds of "Somewhere" I was sold, thinking I've got to have this bad boy

Back when I was at High School I used to buy vinyl weekly, occasionally 2 albums a week. I would save my £5 pocket money and about £3 dinner money a week, enough to buy 2 albums at the then price of £3.99. My collection consisted of lots of rock from AD/DC to Jethro Tull and Rush eventually expanding into all sorts of music. Then CDs ca,e along and the cost of vinyl shot up to ridiculous levels and became harder to get! Record shops like Listen, Virgin, 23rd precinct, Stereo 1 in Paisley disappeared. Fortunately I never binned my vinyl and for 20 years they were up my loft on a box. Amazingly these were in great condition and undamaged.

Since buying my new turntable I have bought about a dozen albums, they are dearer than £3.99 that I was paying in the early 1980s but they are so much better than CDs....I can even read the lyrics and credits , which my ageing eyes struggle with!

I would recommend this to anyone, although I still use Spotify/Sonos every couple of days I'll stick on anything from Neil Young to War on Drugs and crank up the amp.....so much richer sounding than "clean" CDs, hopefully the price and availability will improve.

Go on treat yourselves.

Bought loads over the course of early teens until late 20's, used to DJ at times in Dundee/Edinburgh. Sold all my most valuable ones 4/5 years ago and got a lot of cash quickly. Still have boxes full of it lying around that I could do with sorting.

It's strange that given the current level of technology available people are opting to spend their cash on something that was considered obsolete when CD's came along. Is it the case that people are genuinely appreciative of the sound and want to build up a collection or is it merely a fad and a way to show others how cool you are.

Until this year I had only ever owned one record which I bought in Oxfam in Aberdeen about 12 years ago for £8. It's an original copy of Dark Side of the Moon and although I didn't have a record player I knew I must buy it. I got a record player early this year (Crosley one from HMV) and finally got to play my record. I've bought a few more since then and have a mental list of the albums I'd love to own. I'm also very tempted to collect all the Super Furry Animals albums and singles. Records are quality and I'm glad I've started to buy vinyl and it's good that more people are getting into it, whatever their reasons for doing so.

I considered that too but you'd need a shitload of spare cash kicking about as i'm sure you're aware. Their best albums alone are around £100+ each as they've never been reissued (apart from MWNG) and years out of print.

Radiator, Guerilla, RATW, Lovekraft were gatefolds and the superb sleeves looked amazing. Wish I just bought them back in the day

Aye, I've only recently discovered the prices that these records are going for so it'll have to be a long term goal. On the plus side, there's a decent number of singles on discogs that are relatively cheap so I think I'll start with them after the new year. I follow a guy on instagram and he's managed to collect all the Gorky's albums and singles.

Still got hundreds of mainly rock LP's since I started buying them in the late 70's. Started out with an Ariston turntable bought from that shyster on Argyle St who used to specialise in knives and airguns!! Anyway, came into some money on the mid 80's and treated my self to a new Linn Sondek, Arcam amp and Linn Kan speakers and stands. probably getting a bit long in the tooth now. I always hoped having the first 3 Motorhead LP's on coloured vinyl would be a good investment but sadly it would appear not.

What is the cheapest way to play vinyl and have it sounding better than CD's.

Got loads of vinyl in the house but never play it as only have gf's shity wee all in one record deck.

Spend most of the budget on the turntable and less on amplifier and speakers initially. Rega have a good reputation for quality budget decks and would be good starter. I believe my Linn is nearer 2K now!!
