How do you distribute your music?

Breaking Decency

I pay AC/DC to play live music in my living room once a week.

Also, I get my music from CDs, Isohunt when it was around, and I have vinyl all the way back to 1972 - Deep Purple - Black Night/strange kind of woman

It really is quite odd how an innocuous thread where I enquire about possible better distribution deals still turns into a mess.

OK. Forget the Isohunt, CDs and vinyl. AC/DC play live for me once a week.

C'mon, it's Saturday night and I'm having a wee beer or two, and a bit of fun.

I'll get serious on Monday, OK?

You distribute your music via isohunt? I considered going down the road of seeding torrents just for promotion but decided against it.

Sorry, I'm reading this all wrong.

I don't distribute music. I download it, buy it on CD or vinyl, and do anything imaginable to watch live music.

I take all my tongue in cheek stuff back, as I read your initial post wrong.

No problem, bit of a specialist area.

I wish I knew, mate.

See if you listen to Vic Galloway's BBC Radio Scotland show, you'll hear all these Scottish bands who have their music out there - f**k knows how they do it.

It's damn near impossible to get radio airplay as well, as Sandi Thom will tell you.

Good luck with it.

Its remarkably easy to get the distro deal - i can think of about 20 companies right now. Radio play however is indeed a little more difficult.

What are you aiming to achieve? If you're going for superstardom, write better songs, learn how to put on a good live show and attract people who will handle the distribution side for you. If you're wanting to build up a small fanbase, play live often, hope word spreads via word of mouth and set up a Bandcamp or something to start with. If you're just doing it for fun, distribute it however you like but don't expect anyone to care.

Putting your music on Itunes or Spotify means f**k all if nobody knows that it exists in order to look it up.

I've already achieved what I needed to achieve, just wondered how or if anyone else was going about it.

We've always recored 4-5 tracks, had 100 cds printed to sell at gigs, which normally tides us over til we get the money together to do the next recording session - we're not aiming for superstardom, but it's a good way of generating a bit of extra income. The tracks might be on iTunes as well, but I don't handle that sort of stuff, so I've no idea how well things sell on there.
