Alloa & Dumbarton -Down- Part time more likely to go down than up will probably go down in the next few seasons

Hibs & Rangers -Up- easy decision to make probably go up this year

Falkirk -Up- decent club well run and as soon as Rangers and Hibs leave will be next in line to go up after them

Raith -Down- they will float around mid table but couldn't see them getting promoted and if I had to choose it would be down

Livi -Down- Similar to Raith don't think we will go down anytime soon but we are more likely to float at the bottom half of the table

Queens -Up- had a few good teams in recent years and could see them go up through the play-offs

Morton -Down- good club but probably more likely to go down than up

St Mirren -Up- providing they don't go down this season they will eventually go up again

Problem is, they'll be replaced by Dundee Utd and/or Motherwell and/or Killie and/or Partick and/or Dundee etc etc.

It's going to be tough for anyone in the Championship just now to compete with whoever comes down.

Yeah understand that probably should have said more likely to go up after that.

Hibs - up

Livingston - down

Morton - down

QoS - down

Rovers - down

St Mirren - up

Can't see anyone other than Hibs, The Rangers, Falkirk and St Mirren being promoted in the foreseeable future.

Us and Dumbarton smaller than the likes of albion rovers, Stenhousemuir etc?

Thought that myself. I'd say the Pars and Ayr are bigger than us from the league below. But that's it. We're certainly bigger than Cowden, Peterhead, Albion Rovers, Stenny etc.

For this thread:

Down: Ourselves, Alloa, Morton and Livingston.

Up: Falkirk, Rangers and Hibs

Stuck here for eternity: Raith, QOS, St Mirren.

Between 1982-83 and 2001-02 Queens spent all those seasons in the old 2nd Division, apart from three seasons in the mid to late Eighties in the 1st Division from 1986-87 until 1988-89. Queens were runners-up to Dunfermline in season 1985-86 when they lost out on the title by two points (57 to 55) but still gained promotion, with the league title going to the last day of the season. A certain club named Meadowbank Thistle (now known as Livingston) finished in third on 49 points.

Alloa and Dumbarton are probably at the highest level that they can make being part time.

Raith , Morton and Queens are for the foreseeable going to be competitive but not good enough for promotion.

St Mirren and Livingston are just a mess from top to bottom, they aren't going up but could go down unless something major turns around in their fortunes

Falkirk should be looking up but they'll probably continue flattering to deceive.

Rangers and Hibs promoted Obvs.

Pretty much agree with Sloop John B and likewise I would put those going up and down into sub categories.

Defo up: Rangers, Hibs,

Up at some point: Falkirk, St Mirren,

Up before I die ( reasonable health at mo) Raith, Morton, QoS ( aw, go on!)

Down at some point: Raith, Morton, QoS, Livingston

Down: Alloa, Dumbarton.

Old enough to remember old two division set up. Lots of nothing to play for games.

But now that we have play offs..... Let's get back to twice a season and have a fair play-off system. The English Championship shows how a big league can function with an exciting end to the season. Get it sorted!

Definitely up:

Rangers

Hibs

Falkirk

St Mirren

Probably up:

Raith

Probably down:

Morton

Livingston

QOTS

Definitely down:

Alloa

Dumbarton

Reckon the teams in the "probably" section will stay in the championship for a while to come.

As someone said earlier, Raith are hardest to call.

Alloa and Dumbarton are the part-timers punching above their weight.

The likes of us, QoS, Livi and Morton are eternal Championship teams.

Falkirk and St Mirren try hard but the best they'll do is bottom of the Premiership on a good year and they'll spend plenty time down here in the Championship.

Rangers and Hibs are slumming it and will be gone soon enough, hopefully to be replaced by Dundee United.

The mix between teams regarded as regular top league teams might change a bit with the play off system. I would fancy both Hibs and Rangers to go up this season, Hibs probably via the play offs. That would mean two "premier" league sides coming down - probably perm two from Thistle, Motherwell and Dundee United. Having said that, their are a couple of teams in the SPL I would regard normally as championship sides - Ross County and Hamilton. County are doing well thanks to their oil millionaire whereas Hamilton are reaping the benefit of a long term youth strategy.

Of the remaining Championship sides, probably Falkirk and St Mirren would see themselves as "should be premier league" sides and they are likely to be joined by Dunfermline next season. We are then likely to have a completely full time Championship depending on whether Ayr go fulltime.

There seems to be a few factors at work here though:

1) Part time teams, even ones that pay decent money like Dumbarton, struggle in the championship

2) Infrastructure seems to play a big part. St Mirren were, apart from odd forays, a championship regular until they got their new ground, albeit they can't win at home! Likewise, Falkirk at Brockville were mostly championship regulars until the move to the new ground gave them SPL aspirations. St Johnstone moved up a gear with McDermid Park. Possibly the ground reflects the aspirations of the club!

3) Youth development has a big role and clubs with well developed youth academies often punch above their weight - Hamilton as an example

The change to the play off system has made the championship much more interesting and (once Rangers are away) a really, really tough league to get out of.
