Beatles Favourite Number 1

Strawberry fields Forever

Didn't even get to number 1, in fact it broke the chain.

For me Strawberry Fields Forever is the greatest song of the greatest band. Pretty sure it was recorded on a four track as well which is unbelievable considering how much invention is in there. No one else but the Beatles could have made that song, no one else but Lennon could have wrote that song and it totally blew away everything that went before in terms of sheer musical scope and the mark of pure genius.

I mean, I like Johnny Kidd & the Pirates as much as the next guy but come on, this was something on a different plane...

I think some of the footage shown is from the new Beatles DVD issued last week.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/1-Beatles/dp/B01576X8PA/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1447311631&sr=1-1&keywords=beatles+1

The Beatles “1” was originally released in 2000 and quickly became the fastest selling album of all time. Featuring 27 of the band’s most significant singles, all of which reached #1 in the US or UK charts, this brand new DVD edition features all 27 promo videos, all of which have been beautifully restored up to 4K resolution by a team of film and video technicians and restoration artists who have undertaken painstaking frame-by-frame cleaning, colour-grading, digital enhancement and new edits that took months of dedicated, ‘round-the-clock work to accomplish.
This stunning DVD also includes exclusive audio commentary and filmed introductions by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr respectively, and also features fantastic new stereo and 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS HD surround audio mixes by Giles Martin and Sam Okell at Abbey Road Studios.
Videos include: Love Me Do, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Can’t Buy Me Love, I Feel Fine, Ticket To Ride, Yesterday, Day Tripper, We Can Work It Out, Paperback Writer, Penny Lane, All You Need Is Love, Hey Jude, Something, Come Together, and more!

It's incredible that it never made Number 1, given that on the B side was another Beatles classic - Penny Lane.

What's even more incredible is the fact that it was the ghastly Engelbert Humperdink with the even ghastlier Please Release Me that kept it off the top spot.

I agree SFF was the mark of pure genius as was the creation of Sgt Pepper. It probably was their finest hour. They were quite a band!

Difficult, as my choice would probably vary over the years - When you think of the energy and passion in those early number 1s and compare it to the melodies and lyrics in the late 60s hits. There's real progression mapped out.

I think I'd go for something like Lady Madonna or Eleanor Rigby but there's also something to be said for the tracks when they "broke" America - I Want To Hold Your Hand and Can't Buy Me Love are songs that seemed to capture a moment in history.

As other posers have mentioned - some of the tracks that didn't make number 1 were belters too! (incl Yesterday, Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane, Let it Be and Something)
