I am approaching a significant birthday this year, and while I've already identified a few watches for a shortlist, the one thing I'd really like is a display box, preferably with a section for cufflinks as well.

Any recommendations?

The Wolf watch boxes are very nice but can be expensive.  Hopefully Biggie will be along soon as he’s previously posted up a great looking watch box he has.

Not wanting to insult your intelligence (I’ve no idea how much you know about watches) but remember and keep the box, packaging and papers any watch you chose comes with.  This can effect the resale value of your watch should you ever wish to part company with it.

Good luck with your choice and if you’re looking for any second opinions with your shortlist post them up and I’ll give you my honest opinion.  Best of luck.

I'm fortunate that my sister's friend owns John Mackay Jewellers in Paisley (you might have seen their adverts on STV).

I got my Seiko serviced including a new upgraded capacitor for cost price. It's running like new.

Does he sell watches as well? Some guy.

My grandfather's old formal watch (1960's Gruen Precision Autowind) was still running perfectly, but the time adjustment function (with the crown pulled out to the 2nd position) stopped working a couple of years ago. I had taken it into a Glasgow specialist watch repairer, who told me that there was "no value" in repairing it. Personally, the watch has sentimental value to me, so money wasn;t really a deciding factor, but they just didn't seem interested in even providing me with a quote.

However, I discovered a local watch repairer last week, who said they would quote to repair any vintage watch - assuming they could source parts. I sent both the Gruen & my grandmother's cocktail watch (which still runs, but doesn't keep time) for a quote and was delighted and surprsed by the repair/service costs given.

I'll update when I get the watches back, but I'm absolutely delighted that I'm hopefully getting the Gruen back into full working order

Couldn't possibly bother you for the details of the guy?

Like yourself, have a watch that my Grandfather wore, has no value whatsoever, but very sentimental.

Seen better days, but not come across anyone who said they could fix it.

That's a nice looking watch, even if it's worth not a lot.

I got my old watch repaired at Grange Clocks near the Meadows. It wasn't worth much either but the guy did a good job so I recommended him to a pal who wanted an old clock fixed and they're satisfied with the service too.

Odd question. Do you know what's wrong with the watch? I've got a couple of watches from the same period, 60s to 70s. What I've found is that since it's a mechanical movement of you can wind it, it might not start ticking so you have to give it a bit of a shake to get it started.

The company is Michael Swift (Horologist) who are based in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute.

On his website https://www.michaelswift.co.uk/services he asks that you contact him by email or phone before sending anything in. I had sent an email with a couple of photos of the watch and a description of the fault. He got back to me the same evening, and said I should send it in by special delivery for a free quotation. If he had been unable to fix it, I would also have had to pay for the return postage.

I posted the watches the next day and got a quote back the same night. It will take 4-6 weeks to complete the repairs, so I assume he's busy!

Thanks @Shadow Play and @Bigmouth Strikes Again.

Unlikely I'll need a case that winds anything, more just a display one, but those do look good.

I've got a cufflink case and a watch case from this lot - https://stackers.com/black-cufflink-watch-box-73187

You can add more as you go along and they all match.

  • 2 weeks later...

There’s a good chance this thread will be a bit slow while lockdown is in force so to help keep things going I thought I’d post a photo of Jason Cummings having just signed for Dundee and wearing a Rolex GMT Master II Oystersteel and Everose gold.

Feel free to post photos of footballers flashing some decent watches.  I’d be interested to see what make / type of watches are the most popular.
