I reckon that might be photoshopped - sun's in the same position and the trees haven't grown in four years. Also it may be that the photos were taken on the same day to show the 'expected' losses during the battle. Although that's not much of a morale booster so the second faked photo may show the death toll by December 2014, not the end of the war. Percentage wise, far fewer actually died than is commonly perceived.

my first thought was were the Cameron Highlanders the only outfit alert to the lasting impact of "before" and "after" shots......

I'm calling BS on the Cameron Highlanders photo. It's not really how manning of regiments worked AFAIK. They'd be periodically topped up with new recruits or folk moved from other units as the war progressed. Hence a regiment could have say 2000 men at the start of the war but by the end it could have suffered 3000 casualties.

The photo's doubtless faked but it's supposed to accurately reflect the number of survivors from the top photo by December 1914, not the end of the war. Losses in the early months of the war were horrendous.

Fair enough, I didn't read the comments properly.

Aye, people say we shouldn't have dropped the atom bombs.

An unpopular opinion perhaps, but not among anyone who would have had to fight their way up the Japanese home islands against a bunch of murderous psychopaths.

Every Purple Heart the US military have issued since WW2 was made in 1945 in preparation for the invasion of Japan. That covers the entire Korean and Vietnam wars, plus Iraq, Afghanistan and all the rest, and they've still got plenty left.

My Dad was on a ship heading for India when they thought Japan might break through Burmah. Before they saw land the Yanks were called on deck to get their Indian Campaign medal.

Not necessarily poppy related. Aiden McGeady and James McCarthy would get similar stick from the Scotland support over not playing for the national team that represents where they grew up. Unlike those two who always steered clear of playing for Scotlsnd teams, James McLean represented NI at the youth level before switching allegiances.

Genuine question: did Shane Duffy receive the same level of stick?
