Derry and Londonderry are two completely different cities that by a strange quirk in the space time continuum just happen to be located in the same place.

China Mieville got the inspiration for The City and the City from this. Don't watch the BBC adaptation though.

Oh no it's quite a posh one. They probably have WW1 veterans in storage who come out to fire the cannons (the kind that fire out confetti when your team wins the (lower) league etc).

True fact: British Intelligence were supplied with eports about the conditions inside Auschwitz, and what was happening, by Witold Pilecki, a Polish soldier who volunteered to be captured and imprisoned in Auschwitz.

They didn't believe his reports.

Not sure what they could have done about it if they did believe him. Bomb Auschwitz?

I think the intelligence reports came from a couple of escapees. The allies certainly believed by 1944 that these exterminations were going on, the problem was no one could agree on the moral or military value of bombing the death camps, particularly Auschwitz, even though the inmates would certainly have welcomed it. I'm sure there are stories somewhere of their shortlived joy at the bombing of the nearby IG Farbhen factory, thinking the camp was next.

Obviously the solution would have been to drop millions of poppies on the camp.

When the Nazis knew the game was up they destroyed most of the buildings in Auschwitz and forced the inmates who were able to to march West. The Soviets arrived to find inmates that had been left as they were considered too sick or weak to make the march. I think I’m right in saying the Nazis did this to most of the death camps, few were captured intact, maybe Belsen was.
