The James McClean Sponsored Poppy Thread

Recommended Posts

Apologies, I couldn't find the old one, feel free to merge.

So it's that time again, outrage and fury from those insistent that we remember things by wearing a thing.

Poppy celebrations in London off to a flying start:

Fùck the IRA.

I hope McLean was seething when Sunderland fans were singing that.

I've noticed portakabins on both Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street in the last week, both of which are selling all manner of poppy-related goods - tshirts, hats, hoodies, etc.

Is this now a thing? I've never noticed anything like it before.

One's Poppy Scotland no argument there.

The other is some hardcore loyalist outfit who give money to terrorists.

So i was told.

Remembering: Big business.

We're becoming more and more like America with this "support our boys" stuff.

If we're going to send young guys around the world to shoot at people and get shot at, we should be supporting them when they get back rather than relying on charitable handouts.

Football is now infected with this nonsense, giving the usual suspects the opportunity to ram their own particular brand of support or outrage down our throats. Get politics out of football.

Some of the comments on that are fantastic.

"When my kids are my age we won't have Remembrance Sunday... Just Ramadan"

"Time we stopped the PC garbage and stood up for our own"

I don't really see a reason why anyone wouldn't wear a poppy.

The red clashes with my green crushed velvet suit.

I wear one every year but the Poppy Scotland advert this year is annoying me.It comes across as telling you to wear one and the reasons you should.

The hijacking of the poppy by britnat/bun types is a worry as well.

People who get frothy-mouthed about somebody's decision to wear a poppy or not, in my experience, tend also to be Marine-A-supporting weirdos.

ETA - I tend to wear one myself to the Remembrance Sunday service, but the number of fucks I give about what someone else does or doesn't wear = 0.

They have a reason, granted it's an antiquated and, mostly, ill informed reason. But they have a reason.

That is an astounding comment. Like something from the "From the Message Boards" column in Private Eye.

I've never worn a poppy in my puff. No particular reason, I just haven't.

I did straighten up a poppy wreath that was lying a bit to the side on a memorial on the way up to Thurso last week so I feel I've done my bit.
