Andy Murray Latest and General Tennis Chat

I wonder if a good run in the doubles might hasten his move to that format. He can't have enjoyed being spanked by young, in-form players that he would previously have beaten 19 times out of 20 and he knows all about Bob Bryan. He's extremely unlikely to compete for major singles titles again, but he could win doubles slams.
I've jinxed him now, haven't I.
This seems a great shout.

Keeps him playing, keeps his profile high (he'd be a big draw in all the slams), and hopefully collects some more silverware.

He'll need it if he wants to challenge Jim Clarke as scotland's greatest sportsman...

Murray/Salisbury into the quarter finals after another straight sets victory. One more victory and they’ll be in the medals reckoning.

Liam Broady currently one set all against the Wimbledon semi finalist.

Thsts all the British hopes left after both Djokovic and Barty elected to play mixed doubles.  Meaning Watson/Salisbury are left as alternates. Need two teams to withdraw for them to take a place.

Murray/Salisbury out in the QF to Cilic and Dodig. Were a set and a break up aswell.
Djokovic motoring through in the singles as expected, he has a tough draw in the quarters against local hero Nishokori though.

Nishikori won 2 more games than I would have.

From 4-2 in the first set Djokovic won 8 games in a row.

Novak out!

That's a huge shock, and Djokovic is unlikely to take it well. He's legacy-building now and that gold is the one thing missing on his record - all 4 slams, all 9 Masters, the ATP finals and the Davis Cup. I think that'll be a bigger frustration for him than missing the golden slam, because he might never get the singles gold now. It might be the one that got away.

After giving a sermon on handling pressure in response to a question about Simone Biles, Djokovic loses meekly to Carreno Busta in the bronze medal match, throws a racket into the stand, mortalises another racket against the net post and pulls out of the mixed doubles semi in a big cream puff, denying his partner the chance of a medal.

One Davis Cup title 11 years ago and no Olympic finals in four attempts. Clearly Novak doesn't have the bottle for representing his country.

And Zverev wins the gold.

If this kind of thing is the future of men's singles tennis in the post Big 3/4 era, it doesn't bode well. Djokovic will continue to hoover most of the titles for a while yet because nobody is really ready to replace him. They can only collect the crumbs from his table when his standard slips. It's like early era Federer, but without the beautiful tennis and promise for the future.

Andy Murray has accepted a wild card into Cincinnati, but looks like he’s not competing in the Canadian Masters starting next week.  He shouldn’t need a wild card into the US Open.  He currently needs one person to drop out and he gets the next place in the Main Draw.

That's Murray into the main draw at US Open after Stan Wawrinka withdraws.

Murray and Wawrinka pretty much killed their careers in the French Open semi final in 2017.

Wawrinka is one of seven that potentially could have dropped out.  Federer likely to pull out as well.  Hopefully Murray gets a few matches in Cinci before heading to the US Open.

Got to wonder if we'll see Federer again after the news he's out for several months after knee surgery again.

He's 40 now. The oldest male to win a singles major was Ken Roswell at 37.

Murray beats Gasquet 2-0 in Cincinnati. From the brief highlights it looked like a vintage performance. His signature cross court forehand was on top from.
