As well as David Ferrer, I'd nominate Tomas Berdych as a great player that never won a Slam from most recent times.

Out of nowhere he would pull it together and just smash a member of the big four to smithereens.  Severely waned at the tail end of his career, but he must be still raging at the four missed break points to get himself back in to the Wimbledon final.  Destroyed Djokovic and Federer on that run.

Berdych was one I was thinking of, if he'd won that Wimbledon final vs Nadal after beating Djokovic and Federer on the way that would have been unparalleled.

Ivo Karlovic.

Ah, that was the chap. He was 6 foot 11, wasn't he?

re: the best player never to win a major thing, difficult as would probably have to be an all court player rather than a clay court specialist who was sub-Nadal or a grass-courter in the 1990s

COME ON, TIM!

In fairness, had it not been for Sampras owning the grass he really could have won that. Though the pressure of actually making the final would probably have killed him.

Seriously sad stuff from those having a go at the line judge. You think she chose to go down? She was unexpectedly hit in the throat - probably doesn't take much force to put you down if that happens.

Since Shapovalov fractured that umpire's eye socket there's been zero tolerance for that kind of thing. Djokovic didn't put any force into the ball but the rule is clear, players need to consider the safety of officials and ball-kids. Tim Henman was kicked out of Wimbledon for not much more. It's an absolutely nailed-on default.

I'm not sure how tall he actually is but he's the tallest tennis professional.  Famously put defending champion Leyton Hewitt out in the Wimbledon First Round.  He must be about 40 now.

Speaking of Hewitt, he had a bit of a sneaky weird career. World number 1 and two slam titles by his age-21 season, then did very little for the rest of his career at the top level. Federer, Nadal and even guys like Andy Roddick has ended his time as a very top level player by the early to mid 2000’s, but he was still only 24/25 and played for another decade as a jobber after that.

Surely no-one is actually blaming the woman? The posts on here were piss-takes, surely?

She's obviously not paying particular attention at that split second (I'm not blaming her for that) and so she's taken a sore one to the throat. That's going to wind you and be pretty scary.

It's just a horrible accident, with a bit of blame for djokovic for carelessness. I get that the rule is clear i just think it's really harsh when the player isn't in any way lashing out.

He just dumped his serve, after missing three set points in the game before.  He hits the ball in frustration.  He was lashing out.  Did he intend to hit the line judge?  Definitely not.  Did his direct action injure a line judge?  Yes.  Henman, Nalbandian and Shapovalov have all been defaulted for similar.

He has done this throughout his career.  He has even dismissed his actions in previous press conferences.  He has always paid the fine as it is insignificant to his wealth. The default wasn't harsh in the slightest.  If he is going to be an idiot, he must pay the consequences.

His Instagram post didn't really paint him in a great light either.

He said he was 'not disclosing her name to respect her privacy'. Who on earth asked you to disclose her name anyway? How magnanimous of you Novak to not publicly reveal the name of an innocent woman which would lead the way to huge press attention on her and scrutiny, very thoughtful!

Read a few people saying he was unlucky, both in terms of hitting her, and to get disqualified. Neither is the case. The rule itself is clear cut. And if you hit Tennis balls away in frustration there is a not insignificant chance of hitting someone. I think people forget how many officials and ball kids are in close proximity to a Tennis Court - easily 10-15 people, plus in normal times a crowd in the front rows. In a sport where balls can be hit at 100+ mph you can't just allow players to lash out and then claim it's unlucky when it hits one of the numerous people around the court.
