NEILSTON 2 MARYHILL 6

Maryhill made an impressive start to their league programme with an emphatic and well deserved win at Brig O’ Lea in Neilston.

Maryhill totally dominated the first half hour, and playing some neat football, kept the home side pinned back in their own half for most of the time. Despite being the better team, they failed to find the net, and it was the home side that had the best opportunity when a careless pass from Paul McLernon presented Stevie Graham with a clear run on goal. Fortunately for Hill, Grant Hay managed to block the strkers’shot. Further pressure from Maryhill finally produced a goal in the 33rd minute when KIERAN FURAY’S shot from the edge of the penalty area flew past Neilston keeper James Digney into the net. Against the run of play, Neilston equalised six minutes later when a long ball split the Maryhill defence and was picked up by STEVIE GRAHAM. On this occasion he had more luck, and although Grant Hay managed to get a hand to partially stop the shot, he couldn’t prevent it from finding the net. Three minutes from the interval, Robbie Cameron had a good attempt for Neilston, but Hay saved well. Maryhill replied with a Ryan Lundie drive which was blocked by the Neilston defence, then in quick succession William Wells blasted over from six yards, and a lob by David Quinn was well held by Digney.

Half Time – Neilston 1 Maryhill 1

If Maryhill had failed to capitalise on their outfield dominance in the first half, it was a different story in the second, as more clinical finishing saw them score five times. In the fiftieth minute a pass from Paul Coyle set up PAUL CALLENDER, who slotted the ball home from 12 yards, and twelve minutes later the third goal arrived when a good flick from Kieran Furay was picked up by WILLIAM WELLS whose right foot strike soared high into the net. Only four minutes later it was 4-1 when JAMIE DOCHERTY’S cross from wide on the left swept past the entire Neilston defence and ended up in the net. WILLIAM WELLS got his second and Hill’s fifth when he picked up a great pass from Paul Callender, outpaced Paul Murphy, then fired past the keeper from an acute angle. The goals kept on coming, but the next was for the home side with nine minutes remaining. ROBBIE CAMERON, who had been Neilston’s best player, beat Grant Hay to a corner kick and headed high into the net. It took Maryhill only two minutes to restore their four goal advantage, when DAVID QUINN got his first Maryhill goal with a powerful drive from the edge of the penalty area following good work from substitute Andy Monaghan. Both sides came close in the final stages with sub Max Asante for Maryhill having a good attempt saved by Digney, and Neilston sub Barry Tulloch heading narrowly over from a good position.
