Is Usain Bolt on steroids?

Jamaica has been criticised for having a very lax dope testing system. The leading Jamaican sprinters who have been banned recently are.

Asafa Powell - banned in 2013 for taking a an amphetamine stimulant

Yohan Blake (trains with Bolt) - banned for using stimulant in 2009

Veronica Campbell-Brown - banned in 2013 for taking a diuretic that is used as a masking agent

Sherone Simpson - tested positive in 2013 for the same stimulant as Powell

Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce - banned in 2010 for taking a narcotic

Merlene Ottey tested positive in 1999 for nandrolone, an anabolic steroid. Her ban over-turned on appeal due to a technicality. She competed for Slovenia at the age of 52 in 2012 World Championships!

Ben Johnson's won the Olympic 100m final in 9.79 before being disqualified for taking steroids. Usain Bolt's world record, set in 2009, is 9.58. All the others who have run faster than Johnson have failed doped tests - Justin Gatlin, Asafa Powell, and Tim Montgomery. Bolt has never tested positive so he must be clean!

Tyson Gay is American

Corrected. I was thinking about Bolt's colleagues and competitors who have served doping bans in recent years.

The IAAF is like the UCI in the Armstrong era. Lord Coe's critical comments on the Sunday Times' recent doping articles remind of Verbruggen and McQuaid.

The Grauniad had another explanation last year, genetics and aluminium in the Jamaican soil - http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jul/21/jamaicans-sprinting-athletics-commonwealth-games.

"The first gene associated with powerful sprinting is the angiotensin-converting enzyme, or ACE, gene. If you have a particular variant of this gene (known as the “D allele”) you are likely to have a larger than average heart capable of pumping highly oxygenated blood to muscles quicker than the average human. That also gives your body a better response to training. In people of west African origin, the frequency of the variant is slightly higher than in those of European and Japanese origin. In Jamaica, it’s a little higher than in west Africa."

"University of the West Indies researchers... discovered that a disproportionate number of Jamaica’s Olympians – including Usain Bolt and Veronica Campbell – come from the region containing the island’s aluminium ore deposits."

Nothing to do with doping or poor testing at all!

A man runs fast, must be a cheat. With no evidence whatsoever. Sad state we're in.

The trouble is that when something seems superhuman, it usually is. As been shown everyone who has run under 9.7 has failed a drugs test except bolt. A previous article shows the tolerance rate for testosterone & hgh which means passing a drug test doesn't mean you haven't doped, but you're within an allowable zone.

I'm very skeptical of all elite athletes tbh. It's not something that overly bothers me. If most are on it, it evens the playing field. It's just a shame that people can't be honest about it so noone really knows where they stand.

This has always bothered me.

Is there a definitive time that humans will simply not be able to run 100m in? And if so, what is it?

Not sure what the limit is, but I think it's your tendons that limit it. You can't build them up with steroids etc like you can with muscles.

You do realise Gatlin isn't cheating now, right?

He got caught cheating in 2006 and was banned for 4 years then. Assuming he's been clean since 2010 (which he'd be mental not to be, considering what happened), the fact he cheated a decade ago is totally irrelevant to his running now.

How do we know that drug use doesn't have a permanent effect on the body though?

Was Gatlin beating Bolt whilst he was cheating?

They very rarely directly competed before Gatlin was banned for 4 years. But at that time Bolt hadn't reached his peak and Gatlin was the fastest man in the world. So, yes, he was.

We don't, but I'm happy to make the assumption that him taking PEDs during the timeframe of 2001-2006 is irrelevant to his current level.

Didn't the Sunday Tunes expose of all the drugs cheats from 2005(?) until now effectively clear Farah and Bolt?

Farah has always been there in 10,000. At the World Championships before London 2012 he was in the race until fading down the home straight.

As for Bolt, sometimes you just have to believe in the guy. A bit like Froome in the cycling. He gets it rough because of Armstrong's Tour de France wins, but Armstrong was always very dodgy. He was getting slated by the Sunday Times for about 5 years before anyone took any notice.

I 100% believe Bolt is clean. He is like Michael Johnson when he was breaking records in 200 and 400m. Just too good.

The absolute worst comparisson you could have used. Chris Froome is 100% on something. In the TDF this year Froome was ascending climbs faster that proven drug cheats have in the past.
