Sunrise
Always likely to have been a long shot for the SNP -
LongTimeLurker
The SNP needed a three way split Borders style in 2015 to win this one. The complete collapse of the Tories and any semblance of a pro-Brexit vote ended any chance of that.
ICTJohnboy
Quote Defeated SNP candidate Mr Wills said he gave the Lib Dems "a run for their money in what was the safest seat in Scotland". "We take every election seriously and made a point of trying to speak to as many voters in Shetland as possible - and what this extraordinary result shows it that every seat in Scotland is now winnable for the SNP."
Guest Bob Mahelp
No real surprise. The important thing though is to look beyond the result and see a 14.5% swing to the SNP in Scotland's safest seat, and one of the few where people still vote with local issues in mind rather than national issues. It's an impressive performance, and one that shows the political direction of travel in big, massive, capital letters.

There will be no SNP voter apathy this time round. Union Jack coloured tears and snorters everywhere.

S7C
I get the impression that the Lib Dem candidate could openly admit to being a serial killer up there and they would still vote for him.
Granny Danger
14%+ swing to SNP from Lib Dems who are riding high in the polls and getting unprecedented levels of coverage in the MSM. Also when’d the last time there was an increase in turnout from a normal election to a by-election?

Just like the 'red central belt' and formerly Liberal Highlands, they're chipping away. Indy may come first though. Job done.
Double Jack D
Labour and Tories combined would've lost a deposit. That is quite phenomenal. Also a resounding pro remain vote. If the 14% swing to SNP is replicated across Scotland then we are in UDI territory!
Sunrise
Labour hold Thorniewood - perhaps their strongest area in Scotland? Still hard to say much more than that for them, but expect the centrist Labour types to talk about a fightback. Would hazard a guess Edinburgh South is more an anti-SNP thing, East Lothian is a maybe. Fair point.
