Tories WIN Dalgety Bay by-election, I think on Gordon Brown’s doorstep?

The winning candidate, Dave Coleman, has an interesting social media past...

Anyone have the previous result for comparison?

It's hardly a shock. In 2017, the 4 previous councillors were as follows:

First preferences in 2017

Con 36.6% 2841 votes

Lab 16.8% 1305

SNP 15.8% 1229

SNP 15.0% 1165

So there were 2 SNP, 1 Tory & 1 Lab elected on 30.8%, 36.6% and 16.8% respectively.

On these figures, the Tories were always favourites to win the seat from Labour.

When I lived in Inverkeithing it had an SNP councillor.

Surprised to see it vote Tory but a lot of people from Edinburgh have made the move across the Forth and commute.

Possibly an explanation.

I'll ask my mate who still lives in the Bay how he likes having a Tory councillor.

Shouldn't come as a surprise to those paying attention - Dalgety Bay East elected a Conservative councillor in 1999 (only one in Fife) and 2003 (one of two in Fife). Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay has elected one since 2007, and last year they got 15 seats.

Guest Bob Mahelp

Dalgety Bay is a no-voting stronghold full of middle-class Tory Nimbys who whack themselves off to Nigel farage and the thought of a no-deal Brexit. It's a wankstain of a place that is in no way representative of west or central Fife.

Are the working-age folk moving from Edinburgh to Fife really more likely to be Tories? I'd have thought the opposite if anything. If you're moving out of your own city, presumably to be able to afford to buy, then I would guess you're likely to be young to middle aged and earning an average income. I can see there being plenty of alright jack retired Tories in Aberdour and the like but I don't think this can be blamed on Edinburgh commuters.

Looks like the Tories have nudged a few extra percent on a lower turnout. Hardly a big surprise.

Fife is a fun place with a weird mix of ultra-conservative villages, dire economically decimated former mining villages, the big toons and then English enclave St. Andrews.

Yep, from a polling point of view it's a perfect cross section for Scotland.
