If the merger went through is it possible fans opposed would form new phoenix clubs? Maybe some would start following one of the smaller Zürich clubs such as YF Juventus.

Based on many other recent situations I’ve seen in Europe where a club has done a Rangers, phoenix clubs would almost certainly be formed.

Eastern Europe is full of them right now. Romanian league system in particular currently has two versions of Steaua, Uni Craiova, Rapid Bucharest and Poli Timisoara. All big/decent sized clubs who have gone bankrupt, and have ended up taking over someone else in the league system and re-naming that club, a la Airdrie/Clydebank. The ultras disagree with this and form their own club, which quickly works its way up the leagues.

A phoenix Dnipro are just about promoted back to the Ukrainian Premier, and a phoenix Metalist might be joining them. In Bulgaria there could be two CSKA Sofia’s in the top flight next year.

It’s all a complete mess.

To be honest, I'm not sure. Swiss football in the last 20 years is pretty much just a catalogue of big clubs fucking up financially and starting again in the district leagues*. This would pretty much be the same thing repeating. Zürich politico types would love a single team to be representing the city, and will likely do what they can to promote that as an option if the worst does come to the worst. There have even been rumours that some are making promises of building a ground on the basis that the teams do join together. Given most of the cities here have only one big team(YB Bern, Basel, Luzern, St Gallen, Servette Geneva, Lausanne, Sion off the top of my head) there is definitely a feeling that they can get enough folk behind them to make it work.

*Xamax in 2012, Servette in 2005, Lausanne in 2002, Lugano in 2003 and Sion in 2003 were all relegated to the arse end of the game following bankruptcy. Aarau avoided that fate in 2003 by being bought over when bankruptcy looked inevitable. Servette and Lausanne have something like 25 league titles between them and are relative giants here yet ended up in the regional leagues. FCZ and Grasshoppers have both been running at significant losses and exist only because their main backers have guaranteed their debts until now. Basel, even during their 8 in a row and latter stage of Europe phase a few years back were only secure because their major shareholder wrote off in the region of £50m of debt. There are countless other diddy sides(Wil, Wohlen, Kriens, Bellinzona, Chiasso all spring to mind in the 5 years since I moved here) who have disappeared and reappeared having taken years out of the game due to lack of cash. For a country that is rolling in money and generally as well organised as anywhere on the planet, professional football is an absolute clusterfuck of mismanagement.

I'd say it's likely that FCZ fans would probably start their own side. Grasshoppers however have been fucked by years of off the park issues that have seen their fan base decimated. Not sure they would have the appetite or ability to pick it up and keep going.

Porto blow a 2-0 lead at Rio Ave, conceding twice in the last 5 minutes to draw the game, handing Benfica the advantage in the title race.

Benfica do have to travel to Braga this weekend, though, so it’s not a complete disaster for Porto... yet.

aye,had the game on in the background, thinking it was a yawnfest after porto doubled their lead, glad I watched it till the end!

iirc, did they not do similar earpier this season at home?2 up vs vitoria guimares until late in 2nd half then lost 3-2?

probably too much to hope for that the braga game will be on,ill maybe need to top up my betting account and watch it there

Basel fans not buying any tickets for Swiss Cup final cos tickets start at £38. So they're selling tickets themselves for £19, will walk to the stadium for the game & offer the Swiss FA the collected money. The FA can take it and let them in or turn the money and fans down

I hope they stick to their plan as the only way to protest against ticket prices is just not to go to games. Paying to go in then make some half arsed protest is simply a waste of time.

Quite right to protest the price hike. Pretty much double the standard ticket price for a game between them, in a competition that isn’t taken particularly seriously. As much as it’s still cheap, it’s viewed as a potential starting point for hikes all over the shop. Good luck to them.

Awful decision - with VAR assistance - to deny Lechia a penalty for handball in the Ekstraklasa title shootout between Gdańsk and Legia Warsaw! 7 minutes in, remains 0-0

haven't seen the decision youre talking about but ive seen other VAR decisions that have been atrocious this season, always seeming to go in favour of the "big" team

Watched some of it. Braga were leading at HT, and then ended up getting pumped 4-1.

Benfica's title to lose.

A few goals scored for the top teams.

Bottom teams not so muchIMG_20190504_103558.thumb.jpg.ef1917c0b0d2d1f153be6ef41ab4c340.jpg

Aye, that's pretty common in woman's football though, no?

I met the coach of Vllaznia's (The Brotherhood) women's team. He was strangely proud of his photo with Scott Booth.

  • 2 weeks later...

League titles wrapped up for Salzburg in Austria, Cluj in Romania and Zenit in Russia. None of these particularly surprising. Ajax have all but clinched in the Netherlands as well, as PSV’s defeat at AZ means they now trail Ajax by 3 points and a double figures goal difference.

Plenty of last day deciders coming next couple of weekends, mostly between the usual suspects. There are 2 points separating Bayern and Dortmund with a game to play. Benfica lead Porto by the same margin. Galatasaray and Basaksehir are level on points and face off this weekend, with 2 games left (Basaksehir had a 12 point lead a couple of months ago). In Poland, Legia dropped points at home this weekend, giving Piast Gliwice a 1 point lead with 2 games remaining (Lechia Gdańsk are still in the running mathematically as well).

love to see piast winning it

Always good to see someone different win a title (this will be their first ever). They were 7 points behind Lechia and Legia at the split 5 games ago as well, so they’ve got the momentum.

Polish Ekstraklasa penultimate round of fixtures last night.

Jagiellonia Bialystok 1-0 Legia Warsaw

Lech Poznan 2-1 Lechia Gdańsk

Pogon Szczecin 0-0 Piast Gliwice

Lechia officially out of the title race, so it’s down to Piast and Legia.

Piast 2 points ahead going into the last game, but their superior goal difference is irrelevant as the first tiebreaker in Poland is ‘points gained pre-split’, where Legia were 7 ahead. Piast need to win (H v Lech) or hope Legia don’t (H v Zaglebie Lubin), to clinch the title.

The entire Grasshoppers team have been forced to remove their shirts and hand them over to the ultras. Not fit to wear the jersey!

Incredible. https://t.co/CWktEZVJYA

Mildly amusing, but nothing more than one upmanship on the FC Zürich Ultras who stormed their dressing room and attacked the players when they got relegated a few years ago.

On the subject of FC Zürich, they went into the weekends match with Xamax sitting 1 point off the relegation play off, in 8th place. They came from a goal down to win in Neuchatel, and followed that up with a win last night v Thun, and are now only goal difference away from finishing 3rd and qualifying for the Europa League automatically. Xamax, who are second bottom and currently in the relegation play off spot, could still finish 5th and make the Europa League qualifiers....

In the second division, there are still 6 teams fighting to avoid the single relegation spot at the bottom of the league. At the other end, Aarau and Lausanne are a point apart in the play off race. Both drew last night against sides in the bottom 4, massive missed opportunity for Aarau especially as they were up against 10 men for most of the second half.
