The Terrible Journalism & Tom English Thread

Recommended Posts

The Guardian aren't exactly renowned for their coverage of Scottish football:

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/video/2015/nov/10/steven-mackays-spectacular-penalty-miss-for-brora-rangers-video

In a Highland League match between Vale of Leithen and Brora Rangers, Steven MacKay throws away a chance to put Brora three goals in front with a spectacular penalty miss. The video, posted on the Press and Journal, shows the Vale goalkeeper fouling MacKay for the penalty, before MacKay slips and hits the ball into the stands, with fans around the stadium jeering

Vale Of Leithen. From the Scottish Borders. Playing in the Highland League. "Fair enuff", you think, it's a simple mistake to make. Then you realise they've actually linked to the P&J website which makes absolutely no mention of Vale Of Leithen.

The "Vale" refers to Deveronvale. Obviously.

Partick Thistle remove debt after new shareholder investment
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/34811736

Thistle, who were promoted to the Scottish Premiership in 2014, had been reducing their debt over the past seven years.

The Jags finished eighth on their return to Scotland's top flight

My memories of promotion in 2013 and our 10th place finish in the 2013/14 Premiership are flawed, according to the BBC.

ETA

It has now been hastily re-edited to make the corrections highlighted.

However, by simply changing the dates and finishing position on our return, it now reads as though the statistic of a 500 drop in attendances occurred on the season after promotion compared to the promotion winning season when, in fact, it relates to the second season up when compared to the first season up.

The Jags finished 10th on their return to Scotland's top flight but attendances at Firhill dropped by more than 500 on average.

BBC website...Scottish football home page...2 pieces about Blackburn Rovers appointing a new manager, who is Scottish.

Unless Blackburn have joined a Scottish league, that isn't Scottish football. It's using the flimsiest excuse to feed us yet more English football through the limited resource we are given for genuine Scottish football.

Want to know about a Scot in England? Go to the English football pages. The clues in the title.

I sympathise, but also there's a kind of wish on most people's part to see how "our boys" are doing elsewhere.

There was also an article recently about a Scottish guy who's assisting NI's preparations. That was quite interesting, and very few people would have heard of the lad otherwise.

Sometimes you do have to scratch your head to see the connection though, e.g. when some no-mark English team sack their manager and some jobber like Dougie Freedman is mentioned as a possible successor.

I know where you're coming from but finding out how Scots are doing in England is only a couple of clicks away in it's appropriate place. No need to take up the very limited space we get to promote the Scottish game with it, especially in such prominent positions on the site overshadowing actual Scottish football. Blackburn Rovers are now the lead story under the Headlines section of Scottish football with three pieces about them.

There's space further down the page for Around the UK and Features, which is fair enough as every country's page has that, so magazine articles such as the NI Scottish connection can be covered there.

Not really terrible journalism though is it?

Just a terrible appointment

I actually agree with this. The worst was when David Moyes got sacked by Man United. Basically the entire Scottish football section on the bbc website was about Moyes being sacked, his time at man united, who might replace moyes, where it went wrong etc.

Last night's BBC coverage of the Hibs-Livi game was replete with 'the quality', 'quality in the box' and 'quality in the final third'.

Where do they get such dullards?

Was there an autopsy on the park? At least one player 'opened his body up' in the first half.

And that utter melt Preston told us that after Cummings missed an absolute sitter, that he "would not pay any attention to it, he'd keep plugging away".

Fair enough, but then about three nanoseconds later, this same miss would be "playing on his mind, and he'd be desperate to make amends".

Then, everyone's favourite "edgy" Celtic fan Davie Provan claims that everyone wants Celtic to lose because they're not "the establishment club"

I know it's the sun but it's quite ridiculous.

He's a (lapsed) bluenose. Chip on both shoulders I guess!

Hartley spent four years as a player at Tynecastle and this was the first occasion he had managed a side against his former side. He says though it is difficult to enjoy a 90 minutes in the dugout.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/34892510

I can only assume the words "at Tynecastle" were omitted from the end of the highlighted part.
