The Terrible Journalism & Tom English Thread

Someone literally gets paid to type that on a website.  The mind boggles.

When I read stuff like that I always wonder about the writer's dreams when starting out. A war correspondent? A Pulitzer, maybe? The New York Times? Or maybe a column in World Soccer and a raft of fitba books published?

But, no.

That's like Hearts finishing 3rd in the Premiership and saying we've achieved our goal. Would you then say 'WHAT!!?? YOU DIDN'T SET OUT TO FINISH FIRST??'
Of course they're trying to win. But if we beat the Latvians twice, we'll have done what was expected, got some coefficient points, and boosted our finances a bit.
I don't think it's a given that we'll win tomorrow night, but if we do, then that's fair enough.

Well, you get something for finishing 3rd in the league so not quite the same. I don’t disagree with you saying you’ll have done what’s expected or what would be realistically expected as a minimum, just don’t see that as being the same as ‘set out to do’’. Anyway, not important. Here’s hoping hearts win in any case.

Wait until next season when the reserves have been gubbed a few more times by Gala and Bo'ness etc.  With that kind of experience you'll tear Europe a new arsehole.

The BBC going with 7 (yes 7) headlines on their Scottish football page about The Rangers.

6 stories about how shite they are and 1 about a statue to Walter Smith.

For some reason I read this in a Chick Young voice.

7? Wonder why they've cut back.

Also two big Championship games on tonight so naturally it's the blue bigot puff piece that's been there all day that's still the headline.

Souness knows how to fix Scottish football

I see Rangers plan to build a statue of my dear departed friend Walter Smith outside Ibrox. I cannot think of anything better and I know Ethel, his boys and the wider family will be thrilled.

What he did for the football club - winning ten league titles and eleven domestic cups - was as great as any of the previous managers you want to name and that includes the great Bill Struth.

On that topic, it's been a dire Champions League campaign for the two Glasgow clubs who so far have mustered just four goals and two points between them from ten games. It's such a disappointment for Scottish football but people ask me why they are uncompetitive and I will tell you.

I live in Bournemouth where the football club has an 11,000-seat stadium but manages to play in the Premier League on the back of annual TV income upwards of £90m.

Celtic and Rangers are huge clubs with massive fanbases and capacities in excess of 50,000 but their TV money is a tiny fraction of that, only about £2m or £3m a year. So there is your answer.

If the two Glasgow clubs agreed to build a 100,000 stadium to share and they joined our Premier League they would soon be progressive top half clubs. I would have them down here in a heartbeat. The rest of Scottish football would not collapse. It would simply have to find its own level.

Once again a moron with past connections waxes lyrical about the good things that would happen to Rantic if they moved to England, without addressing the patently obvious problem that English clubs neither want nor need them. English clubs allowing them access, even to the lower tiers, would be like turkeys voting for Christmas, and that's purely from a financial viewpoint, before you even begin to look at sectarian bigotry and other crowd behaviour issues.

Souness is a moron.

He defeats his own argument with his own argument. That Bournemouth, a club with a stadium with a smaller capacity than East End Park, are playing in the English top league, and one of the top leagues in the world, shows that stadium capacity and fan base are absolutely no guarantee of anything. There are clubs across the English leagues with bigger fanbases and stadiums than some of the clubs in the EPL who are nowhere near the top flight.

Being a traditional 'big club' means absolutely nothing in Englang any longer, and hasn't done for years. Nottingham Forest are a prime example, and they may get fucked right back out of a league they've spent decades aspiring to.

English football don't need or care about Celtic and Sevco. Should those clubs gain entry at some level, they'd probably rise to Championship level with few problems (although I could see one of them spend at least a further season in League 1) but then would struggle to get to the EPL. Wouldn't put it past them to, eventually, get up, but they'd be absolute fodder and would most likely be pumped back down.

Instead of some big ground (and many EPL clubs either have bigger grounds than Celtic and Sevco or will soon have bigger grounds), what Celtic/Sevco need to compete in England is massive investment of cash from some scumbag oil regime like Dubai/UAE/Saudi Arabia/USA/etc.

You know as well that should such investment ever happen the Celtic fans who pretend to be socialist will spread their cheeks for it. Sevco fans don't pretend to be socialist so won't need to supplicate themselves in such a manner as they'll be too busy doing so for royalty/the military/the Tories/Northern Ireland/the KKK/etc.
