The Terrible Journalism & Tom English Thread

Barry Ferguson on the McGregor/L.Ferguson incident IN THE SAME ARTICLE:

'But thankfully Lewis never got hurt. It's a booking for me and it's outside the box.'

He then says:

'It was a reckless challenge and it does deserve to be a penalty. I think it might have deserved a red card.'

That's just laughable.

When the Sun meets Barry Ferguson, it maybe shouldn't surprise us that the result is incomprehensible, contradictory drivel.

It does read a lot like Barry confused himself in the internal conflict over being Lewis' Uncle and a staunch Rangers man, resulting in the nonsensical verbal diarrhoea contained in that article.

I think the first quote is meant to be Barry Ferguson quoting McGregor, then the second is just Barry's opinion. That's the only way I can make sense of it anyway.

It initially looks like only the first couple of quotes were from Ferguson & McGregor's conversation but, it then seems to flit between that and Ferguson's comments to the Sun reporter wihtout actually clarifying what's been said by who. It's terrible journalism either way.

ETA: Reading it again it seems less like that. I've no idea...

That explanation would make sense, but it doesn't really read that way at all, given the quotes that sit either side of it, which very clear belong to Barry Ferguson himself.

You're right that it's terrible journalism either way, but I think the real way to make sense of it is to recognise the difficulty Ferguson has when striving to make sense.

The Sun may just have made up all the quotes anyway, as if they were really from Barry surely they would all start with "Listen...."

That is a classic, one of the best examples in this thread...

Don't most of these guys just rubber stamp copy that someone else wrote? Perhaps someone was having a bet in the office he wouldn't even read it before signing it off.

They probably have him two options for an answer and he either was too thick to realise and signed off on both or they just ignored what he said and printed it all by mistake.

This is a terrible all-rounder.

How would Scottish football look with only Scottish players?

The formatting of the tables alone should see someone taken outside and shot, never mind the utter pointlessness of the whole article.

Interesting couple of links above.

Not bad for someone who insists football...will always come second to his day job and his studies.
That'll be third then.

They had three options; they could not play at all, they could find the money to book a pitch for an hour, or they could sneak in. Perhaps unsurprisingly, most youngsters choose the latter option.
That's the latter of three.

Wanted - journalists for leading media organisations. Ability in English not needed.

Wow.

Scottish football writing produces some serious dross, but this is up there for sheer pointlessness.

Who signed off on this?
