Mis matched pre-season friendlys

Recommended Posts

Estonian Cup continues to bring pre-season joy as fifth tier side Eston Villa put 15 past non-league Metsis yesterday without reply.
An update on this seasons Estonian ridiculousness:

The aforementioned Eston Villa departed in the next round against Rasmus Värki JK, who seem to be named after some bloke (perhaps the Baltic version of Wilson's XI). They then progressed into the last 16 alongside fellow minnows ReUnited, who picked up a 5-2 win over works team Neo Processing Materials Silmet. Team Helm came a cropper in the last 32 stage though with a 21-1 defeat at home to top flight Levadia.

We're now in the last 16 and while ReUnited and Rasmus Värki acquitted themselves well in defeats against better opposition, Eston Villa II (the second string of the team that won 15-0 in June) were horsed 21-0 by defending champions Narva Trans yesterday, Eduard Golovljov scoring 9 goals including 8 in a 27 minute spell in the second half.

What a tournament.

I cannot stop saying Eston Villa in a ridiculous Australian accent.

The only thing that would improve it would be by inviting teams from Moldova, Liechtenstein & Monaco and also playing the U12 teams associated with the top teams imho.

Invite these sides into the Irn Bru Cup

We have had few mis-matched friendlies to report on due to the blasted coronavirus, but thankfully my fears of a truncated Estonian Cup 2020/21 appear to have been premature.

Flora take on Narva Trans (who have had a shocking league campaign so far) in the 2019/20 final tomorrow, but of course everyones main interest should be in the draw for next year's tournament

There are at least a couple of potential cricket scores in the first round, with top flight teams in action against diddy non-league teams. Tallinna Kalev are due to host AFC Eyjafjallajökull, who are named after the Icelandic volcano for some unknown reason.

While that's good, perhaps the ultimate in top flight vs pub league fixtures is the match which sees Tallinna JK Legion take on "IBK Here for Beer".

Arbroath must be shitting themselves worrying their record will be broken.

Love the badge of the original Icelandic team...

The Here for Beer boys fared better than expected, keeping the scoreline down to 9-0.

Eyjafjallajökull, despite the cool badge of their Icelandic counterparts, lacked volcanic spirit and conceded 24 against Paide (not Kalev as originally stated) which is the biggest margin of victory so far.

The Estonian Cup is genuinely my favourite competition (other than the Barclays).
Its presence is reassuring in these trying times.

We're into the last 16 now, and while there haven't been any scuddings to rival those of 5/6 years ago, big victories aren't just limited to the early rounds, as tonight's score of Kompanii Märjamaa 0 Tammeka Tartu 15 evidences.

SV SW Lieboch 11 SV Peggau II 0 on Saturday was a welcome return to mis-matched pre-season friendly nonsense.

Even better though, is the new 2021-2022 "season" of everyone's favourite tournament, the Eesti Karikas (Estonian Cup). Fourth tier Raplamaa kicked off the tournament with a 15-0 demolition of amateurs Wolfram FC.

The IBK Here For Beer boys are presumably undeterred by last years 9-0 defeat against Tallinna JK Legion and face top flight opposition again in Narva Trans, which is one of the likelier cricket scores in the first round. Although when a fourth tier side wins 15-0 against a Rahvaliiga side (pub/amateur level) you can never rule out a massacre.

The early rounds of the Estonian cup have been disappointingly tame this season. Wiki shows a lot of scratched ties, so I'm assuming COVID is the cause for most of them. I was genuinely looking forward to seeing what the Narva Vs IBK Here for Beer score was going to be.

Yep, I agree. Still a decent number of potential cricket scores in the second round as long as the Rahvaliiga and fifth/sixth tier sides don't withdraw.
