Rio Olympics Torch

Recommended Posts

The Olympic Torch was first introduced to the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and it was the fun loving National Socialists who introduced the idea for the 1936 Olympics of lighting it in Greece and having a relay from Greece to the host nation.

I saw the thing go past the old Edinburgh Royal Infirmary back in 2012. I wasn't terribly impressed- see fag lighters with a better flame but there you are.

You can see a torch used for the Montreal Olympics on display in the Aberdeen Sports Village....

Massive PR disaster for the Rio games today when they decided it was a good idea to involve a chained up jaguar which ended up being shot dead - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-36593573

Also the state of Rio has declared a financial emergency - http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-olympics-rio-spending-idUKKCN0Z72YH

Anyone else feel these Olympics could turn out to be a bit of a farce?

every single olympics/World Cup/ commonwealth games not held in Western Europe or America is described as being poorly managed though invariably they tend to be fine. Rio will be no different.

Very true, personally think the doping/corruption scandals are at risk of removing any credibility from the athletics permanently.
