Rothes on the Brink?

Recommended Posts

Scudded 11-0 at Brora today... Are they struggling to raise a half-decent team, or is it just a reflection of Brora being in a different league?

Fort also lost 6-0 at Forres, tbf.

Rothes conceded 142 goals in 34 league games last season while Brora scored 134 goals. This score line isn't a massive surprise I'd say. Edited by NorthernLights

Rothes invariably suck in August, almost as if the new season catches them by surprise every year. They managed 8-0 and 8-1 defeats in the space of four days this time last year.

Meanwhile, Banks o' Dee are licensed and want in and could reasonably be expected to finish in the top half of the table most seasons. The pyramid concept is a good one, but its implementation by the SFA has been half-hearted at best to put things charitably and could reasonably be termed farcical when a club like Rothes gets into the fifth tier with no process implemented to consider whether clubs from outside the HL were more deserving.

Who's not in the pyramid that wants to be there?

The north region junior superleague club mentioned at the start of that post. The only junior club that expressed a desire to get into the new fifth tier were not even given an opportunity to apply.

As things stand they have until the end of the week to pay £20k.

I see the answer as to how a club the size of Rothes could amass such a tax debt has been answered by the fact they haven't been paying since July 2009!

Amazed debts could accrue for that long without action.

Anyway, sounds pretty grim, particularly as the previous defiant chairman has resigned without being at the meeting... although his wife continues as treasurer... and fans are talking about letting the club fold or hoping this local millionaire steps in.

Neither do Amazon or Starbucks and nobody picks on them. In fact they are encouraged. Perhaps Rothes should claim the AMABUCKS tax law

Only lost 3-1 the day, to Fraserburgh at home.

Brora rattled in 8 at Victoria Park against Buckie.

Which begs the question of how they got a license, if being administered to professional standards forms part of the criteria.

Their treasurer wifey recently opened up to the local papers, saying that she realised she was in over her head after taking up the role. Rather than ask for help, she just kept struggling and struggling, saying nothing to anybody at the club.

I remember a classic line from the documented fans Q&A session, with one guy saying: "You can't just walk up to a local business like Diageo and say 'we've made a rip roaring arse of this, can you give us £30k?'. That's not a great sales pitch".

They really are a joke club. I don't like to see clubs struggling but you really do wonder what the point is of Rothes trying to compete at this level. Just wasting everyone's time.

Thing is they took repeated tankings last season as well, although none as bad as these, and weren't that far behind Strathspey and Huntly!!

Interesting stats... last season, there were only 8 games in SPFL2 where one team scored 5 or more goals. There were 23 such games in the Lowland League. In the Highland League there were an astonishing 68 such instances. So far this season the corresponding figures are 1, 1, and 9. You've got a couple of divisions worth of teams in HL, really - exacerbated by the fact there is no relegation so the poorest teams don't drop out and get replaced.

Wick also annihilated Fort 8-1 today and Formartine won 8-1 at Deveronvale.

The Highland league is too big. Split in two and invite a few north juniors to join to make decent sized divisions.

If FitbaNorth is to believed Rothes goalkeeping coach played in goals today.

Apparently he's never played as a goalkeeper at any level :unsure2:.

Must be incredibly dispiriting for their players... 23 goals in 2 games. 'Only' Nairn next.

You can fcuk right off with that idea. Do any fans like the 4+ times a season system for the SPFL? The beauty of the Highland League is one away game and one away. However I admit there are too many wildly lopsided games, so maybe a split after Christmas might make sense, which would be difficult to make fair. Maybe some version of the wonderfully bizarre Belgian Jupiter League system.
