Technically, northern ireland  isn't part of Britain, so you're only partly right. At this moment (soon to change, I hope), I'm a UK citizen. Like many, I don't consider myself British.

People from Northern Ireland are indeed British in terms of nationality

Incorrect.

They have the choice of British citizenship, Irish citizenship or both. It's a choice, not a compulsion.

Accordingly, my original statement (about DPB being partly right) is correct.

Why are Yoons so desperate to ascribe British nationality to some people that don't want it, yet want to refuse it to some other people that do? Surely it can't all be due to skin colour?

Interesting reflection by a scottish Unionist who realises there is no longer a union to defend.

Wonder how many are feeling the same at the moment.

I’m forced to confront things I’d prefer to avoid.”

I’ve thought for years that this is at the root cause of some UK Nationalists’ vitriolic, almost hysterical hatred of the SNP. Until that party brought independence into the mainstream, it was possible to wax lyrical about being a proud and patriotic Scot without actually wanting Scotland to be anything more than a wee bit of another country. No one asked any questions. Then the SNP encouraged them to put their money where their mouths where - on the “patriotic” bit especially - and the reaction to having to jump either way - is Scotland your country or the UK? - was pure rage at the SNP for yanking away the fig leaf of a belief in Scotland.

That's an excellent article, thanks for posting it. Even if I didn't agree with most of it, which I do, it would still be worth reading.

Ireland isn’t Britain

Of course it  is, geographically.  We're 'Great Britain' and Ireland is 'little Britain'.  All part of  the British Isles.

All well established before  we became 'Great Britain' politically and nothing  objectionable either.

Well established by who?

It’s a highly political term and don’t pretend it isn’t

Not sure where to start with that, so I won’t. What a pile of shite.

Ireland don't consider themselves as part of the so called British Isles.

It’s a very boring, pedantic, pub-quiz level geographical fact. Ireland is one of the British Isles. Nothing political about it. It’s just geography. Just as the Falklands are South American and the Canary Islands are African.

Wrong.  The word Great is used to differentiate between this island and Brittany.
