Yes we can, and do. It's just a matter of using excess power to pump water uphill to a reservoir and dropping it back down through a turbine generator when needed.

We don't have sufficient capacity to store all our excess power using the two existing pump storage hydro facilities.

Nor do these have the capacity to power Scotland "when the wind isn't blowing". I hate that phrase as there are very few times when Scotland does not have wind blowing across the whole country.

The whole first paragraph makes it seem like Theresa May or David Cameron were beloved characters that people loved to see across the border....well it doesn't but if you don't accept that that's pretty much the status quo for Tory leaders visiting Scotland rather than the particular individual themselves then you're arguement that Boris himself leads to anything tangible towards Indy is based on hopium.
I've said countless times that Bojo wont allow a referendum so the centrist sensible pro Indy viewpoint is to hope the next Tory leader is a lil bitch that allows one, the only point I'm countering is the idea that big batty Bojo himself will lead to Indy...
At least the Maybot eventually sacked that cűnt Patel.
Johnson has sent a clear message to his crew that they are accountable to nobody, and rampant corruption is not only permissible, it's positively encouraged.
There's no such thing as a decent Tory but these cűnts are on a totally new level for a so-called developed nation

Another 450MW in the pipeline at the top end of Loch Ness. Every little helps.

The only other feasible alternatives are underground compressed air storage or liquid air storage - but the technology for both are still in their infancy.

Flow batteries have promised a lot but delivered little - the costs of vanadium flow technology is prohibitive. ESS have gone down the iron flow route but it's still way too early to see if this comparatively less expensive option is feasible.

The Majority: Hundreds of active members of pro-Union group found to be fake

https://www.thenational.scot/news/19470364.majority-hundreds-active-members-pro-union-group-found-fake/?ref=twtrec

A SIZEABLE percentage of the membership of The Majority, a Unionist campaign group and media outlet which claims to “expose Nationalist ideology”, is made up of fake accounts promoting escorts, marijuana delivery, and other services abroad

Lordy.

Absolutely correct and, on poor wind days, Scotland needs to import from England.

In many ways Scotland is more dependent than England.

This utter bollocks. As already pointed out, Scotland is a big net exporter of energy internally within the UK. Scotland produces so much electricity, it's not uncommon for generators to be paid to decrease generation or for consumers to be paid to consume more. That's the reverse in most part of England.

Fair enough. I’m certainly no engineer but a couple of questions.

Surely we must need a base capacity from, gas, nuclear and other sources to cope wit those windless days.

Is this wrong?

Genuinely interested.

Huge resources are being out into storage. It's not just hydro but battery farms now. The technology isn't there yet to go without a decent base of non-renewables but it's advancing rapidly. The size of the base needed to guarantee supply will steadily increase over time as storage technology advances and it's usage increases.

If what you say is correct, and I’ve no reason to doubt you, then that’s good news.

Alway was a bit scared about Torness being decommissioned as I liked the idea of nuclear being in the mix.

In a lot of ways it makes sense for nuclear to be in there. It's probably quite difficult to estimate whether they'll be cost effective longer term.

I have no knowledge or understanding of the energy industry, but over decades I have seen technology adapt and innovate to meet what is required in so many fields.

So I assume that in the coming years we will see innovations that allow us to store energy efficiently.  Some of the technology might not even be invented yet.

I mind hearing years ago that glass was the energy storage medium of the future. A quick Google seems to indicate that it's still in development, and there are plenty of people who think it's a bullshit idea that'll never work.

Anyone know a bit more about this?

Really? I’d heard they’d cracked it!

Battery storage whether for battery farms or electric cars is going to bring its own problems with it but a diverse range of energy storage option like a diverse range of power types for cars is required not one single answer but many will do the job better and plenty reason to think its coming, though more investment would be good to see
