Yet another US shooting

Recommended Posts

Thanks, I didn't know that. I'd say I'm surprised that the number of states which don't allow folk to arm themselves whilst drinking in a bar is that low but I'd be lying.

Obama's due to make a statement in a few minutes. He'll no doubt talk about the need for stricter gun counter, higher magazine-capacity bans etc. But as per, sweet f**k all will be done about it.

I think many of the states which do allow guns in bars have a legal limit for blood alcohol content when you are carrying.

I don't think Islam is more intolerant than Christianity more they just haven't had to row back their opinion in the face of secularisation. But I do accept that these communities have a real problem.

Based on what?

I've referred in the politics forum to an extensive survey of Muslims in the UK (one of the more tolerant countries IMO) that shows a shocking level of homophobia. I've not seen an equivalent level amongst any survey of Christians; if you have maybe you could point me to it.

I realise in referring to Muslims and Christians I am not disaggregating into sects of either religion.

Don't accuse me of saying something I didn't say. There are plenty of homophobia that is not religiously 'inspired'. However there is a greater degree of homophobia amongst religious folk and certain religions, including Islam, are far more homophobic than others.

When will Njord be supplying the 'worst mass shooting in the US' of which this one doesn't get 'close' to?

When will he explain his 'doesn't matter that it's a gay club' comment?

Edit - Njord autocorrects to 'abhorrent'. Quite fitting.

Yet 'deeboy' autocorrect to '*** fucker'.

Go figure.

Except you're innumerate.

Islam's problem is that Muhammad claims to be the last prophet. His word is the final word of God. And his word requires the execution of gays. There's no way to reform Islam while also staying true to it's essential teachings. A certain number of followers in any religion will end up down the fundamentalist rabbit hole. Islam has a problem because there's no way to go down that rabbit hole and still hold onto any type of belief in liberal society.

Is it possible that the gunman will be found to have owned his assault rifle legally?

I think it's entirely plausible.

Murica

He was a security officer. He had both a personal carry permit and an enhanced permit because of his job.

What's wrong with that?

Just seems like it would be weird knowing that each call is from somebody hoping that their friend / family member is alive.

Terrified family trying to contact loved ones would be heartbroken every time the phone goes to voicemail. Not that I am saying finding out they were killed would be better.

At least it doesn't disgust you like it seems to do to Yank Mike.

Excuse the double post above but Uganda and other nations have attempted to instate the death penalty for Christians while wide parts of the west within living memory either criminalised the LGBT community or went further while places like the US have operated or continue to still operate conversion camps and therapy. There's plenty of indicators, particularly the further you go into the community (trans and other groups) that face real discrimination, physical assaults and even murder in the west while being denied basic amenities such as bathroom access.

I think my point is that so far most of the things said by the people that knew the perpetrator have downplayed any religious role which maybe makes right wing commentators within the US more uncomfortable as it would force them to look at their own group if this attack was committed by what it could well have been. A rabid right wing gun fanatic.
