Boris as well was against banning guns, I wish Blackford had reminded him of this when he was heaping on "thoughts and prayers"

Yes he should have.

Strange none of this stuff cropped up yesterday.

The second amendment made sense at the time.  A brand new country had no army, navy or air force.  How was it going to defend itself?  A militia was the answer.

America now has the world's largest military.  The purpose of the second amendment is no longer there.

It is quite funny that the red neck militias think they could fight the US police and army.

“The freest, safest country in the world”. Only right wing American fundamentalist nut jobs think that’s true.

If the safest country in the world routine has massacres at schools, churches and social settings I would be worried about what they thought the most dangerous countries are like, although of course most Americans that have been abroad have only been to a war zone in a war the Yanks started.

Wow, that was revealing.

Well done Sky News.

Cruz has shown who he really is countless times. He keeps getting in due to what basically amounts to voter suppression. The texas denizens who would vote against him have either been disenfranchised officially (drug possession conviction = never being able to vote again) or unofficially (hispanics and other african americans tend to have to work so much they can't get the time off to vote). The republicans vote for him because he isn't a "liberal" and because he ascribes to the same performative christianity (talk about taking the Lord's name in vain!) that they do. He also plays a mean dog whistle, and he plays the familiar and soothing music that is right up the streets of white texans.

What America needs is another revolution, and I do believe it is slowly happening. The Republicans are moving further into fascism because they're terrified that the inchoate anger of every day Americans is finding some form. The republicans are losing power with the demography of red states beginning to flex its voting muscle. Witness Georgia flipping to Democrat recently, which was no fluke. Stacy Abrams and the Rock The Vote initiative reawakened the latent power of black and latin american voters there and they won't go back in their box. Other states like Arizona and Alabama will follow suit. Young workers are forming Unions and don't buy the "socialism is bad mmkay" narrative which gripped their forebears (it's a quartet of Rangers fans, but never mind that just now). There are obviously reasons to feel jaded and horrified, and especially after recent events, but what we are seeing are the death throws of white conservative America. Guys like Cruz know that their days are numbered.

Plus no assault weapons

You're talking about flintlock single shot guns being the apex of personal defence

The cops left the guy inside the school for over an hour. Getting medical treatment for the children with gun shot wounds wasn't a priority.

The gunman who killed 19 students and two teachers at a Texas elementary school Tuesday was on the premises for up to an hour before law enforcement forcibly entered a classroom and killed him, officials said Wednesday.

"It's going to be within, like 40 minutes or something, (within) an hour," Texas Department of Public Safety director Steven McCraw told CNN's Ed Lavandera at a news conference.
The 18-year-old shooter, Salvador Ramos, was in a standoff with law enforcement officers for about a half-hour after firing on students and teachers, Rep. Tony Gonzales, whose district includes Uvalde, told CNN's Jake Tapper, citing a briefing he was given.

Posted this in response to some guy banging on about the second amendment on an American forum a while back..

Why do Americans get so hung up about some stuff scribbled down by a bunch of slave owners 230 years ago? It's like a religious cult. And the bit about the need for a well regulated militia justifying the right of random nutters to stroll down shopping malls with AK47s, what's all that about?

Hiding behind a law written over 200 years ago to justify the ownership of assault rifles is disingenuous.  Everyone knows it including the gun lobby.

Nothing will change in the USA, this thread will be running as long as P&B exists.

The 2nd Amendment should really by now hold about as much weight as the ancient law that allows a Scotsman to be shot in York with a bow and arrow, except on a Sunday...!

But you know, America is full of Americans...soooooo...

It baffles me the morons that support arming the school teacher or having guards and extra security at the school.

The shooters aren't going to stop they'd probably just wander down to the local shopping centres and inflict their damage elsewhere. Sure it'd be preferable than not having children shot up but I feel like it's spectacularly missing the fundamental issue.

Its only "free and safe" if you are a white, rich person living in some gated development in the middle of nowhere.

People like Cruz are as removed from real life as some of our own cunto westminster wanksacks.

It's the fact that he spouts the "freeist, safest" shite then tells the reporter to "stop being a propagandist" that impressed me the most.

A huge number of politicians here in the UK are selfish, amoral arseholes, but at least we don't have the absolute fucking lunatics they do over there
