The Greenock Morton Thread - It's Better Than Yours

The Goon has got it dead right. And so have Morton.  The club could’ve just posted something on theMorton website, which maybe 50 or so folk would’ve read, about a falsehood aired on national radio and heard by thousands. Complaining to the BBC has led to an apology for what was said; that apology will also have been heard by thousands and the complaint also got plenty of attention in the papers and online. Job done.

If nothing else, if it makes the BBC think twice before they have Craig Levein spouting nonsense on the radio again it will be a public service to thank Morton for.

Now if Morton could deal with Tom English please... Thanks.

Unfortunately, much as he's become a laughable propagandist for Hearts in the last 4 months, I am not aware of English telling any outright lies on air. We'll probably have to wait a bit longer to deal with him.

No, he seems a bit more calculated than that. He whispered it to Levein and let him say it.

It didn't make them think long. He's back on this afternoon!

I didn't think it would be this depressing.

Well Sean McGinty is in the Tele today claiming to be 'a natural born leader' for the young players to follow if you want a good laugh.

He really must get on your goat if he gets you in this much of a paddy, or are you just kidding?

You're being linked with Wallace Duffy this morning in our papers.

Good luck.

I know you thought he was terrible, attributing your improvement in defence and resultant climb away from the relegation battle pretty much directly to the point where he stopped playing. However our only centre backs are Sean McGinty and 35 year old Brian McLean, while our only right back is a 21 year old with three first team appearances who didn't play once last season despite not having a first team right back at the club until January.

The bar for being less bad than what we have is therefore extremely low. Although if you're looking to punt him entirely rather than loan him out, with the noises coming out of the club lately I wouldn't be particularly surprised if Cove could make him a better offer.

It was, we went from averaging over 2 goals a game to under 1, simply be swapping him for Jamie McCart/Liam Gordon.

Hes young, and badly needs games, to see what level he's actually at. His only senior experience was in our mess of a side early last season and he maybe understandably struggled.

Managers just confirmed there if hes leaving it'll be a loan. He also wants him to move to a club where he'll play every week. Cove have had two of our players previously on loan, but neither played regularly.

Any defender we sign is pretty much guaranteed a game, particularly when he can play both right back and centre back. As above, our only centre backs are probably the worst two in the division, one of them is an injury prone 35 year old and the right back has no real first team experience at 21. Even if we were to sign another couple of defenders as well as Duffy he'll still get a game.

Hynes now sent out on loan.

Yeah, going to the Lowland League at 21 doesn't suggest he'll be imminently stepping up to Championship football. Makes you wonder why he got a new contract when he was one of those being kept on in order to contribute to the first team rather than go out on loan to continue developing - if Hopkin wasn't confident these guys were up to first team football they shouldn't have been getting new contracts.

Wylie being one of those to go on loan is a shame though. If he's not ready for this level of football then of course it's the right thing to do, but how much of the budget we've saved through putting players out on loan is wiped out by now needing to sign two goalkeepers rather than one?

There's pretty much no chance any of those clubs other than possibly BSC Glasgow is contributing anything in wages. You'll not have saved anything.

Positive sign, though. I was beginning to get the fear that Hopkin was actually going to rely on some of the players just loaned out as part of his ‘first-team squad’; he’s now accepted that none of them are remotely good enough at this point in their development.

We must be planning for four or five Incoming, loans or otherwise; not getting too carried away by what the standard of those signings will be, but they’ll at least be guys who have played professional football at some credible level.

Or they could be total jobbers from the dregs of a top flight youth setup instead (see Livingstone, A; Dykes, D).

I think we might do a bit better than that... (translation: we had fkn better...).

Keeper(s) will almost certainly be loan(s) and there are dozens of keepers floating around the English leagues not getting a game. Defenders might well be off the shelf the likes of Wallace Duffy is on... but I’ll be surprised if we’re subjected to the likes of van Scheik or Livingstone again.

Where he pulls a credible goalscorer from is another matter altogether; odds on we’ll be doing without.

On a good day, I imagine a solid, organised, hard-working base, with Nesbitt and Omar tearing this pish league up In front of it; on a bad day... well, we don’t have to think too far back to imagine how bad it might get...

None of us know who the club will sign and whether those signings will prove to be good, bad or indifferent, only time will tell. The only thing that can be relied on in this thread is that as soon as someone posts something that is even-handed and level-headed with just a little bit of cautious optimism then someone else will come in with a post that tries to drag  it all down to swamp level again.

You have to laugh, really.

No, really.
