The Greenock Morton Thread - It's Better Than Yours

I think Jacobs has been better at right back than he has been in midfield,  which isn't saying much. He has been completely ineffective in a midfield which has probably been the worst in the league so far this season.

Fair enough, you've watched him all season. For us he was terrific in that holding midfield destructive role for three years, exactly as Dunning described. He can't pass the ball more than 5 yards without losing it (if he could pass a ball he wouldn't be playing at this level) but he's tenacious, gets everywhere, deceptively good in the air and wins tackles. I'd take him back in a heartbeat. He's the sort of midfielder who does the dirty work to let others play. As a bonus he takes a great penalty.

Aye, he took a very good penalty against Thistle a couple of weeks ago. As for the rest, I wish we were seeing that (well, the can't pass a ball very well bit has been accurate). He's looked a bit lost and certainly hasn't settled into the midfield. Lots of shoulder shrugs and lots of indecision so far from him. If he's there to dominate in a defensive sense, he has never looked comfortable enough in our midfield to do that.

I think the problem with Jacobs is that he's in a midfield with McAllister & Millar.  If Jacobs could just play the role he played at Queens that would be fine, but like most of our team, the midfield is a bit unbalanced.  Probably solved by moving McAllister to, well, Dumbartion maybe.

Jacobs has done absolutely nothing in a Morton jersey to show why he shouldn't be shipped out to Dumbarton instead: they're all as mediocre as each other. At the moment Colville and Lyon should be playing with just one of those three alongside them, with Millar actually having a decent game on Saturday to bring him back into the discussion.

Don't disagree with that.  However having McAllister in particular in our midfield is the main problem.  He takes up a place that could be better filled by someone else, Millar or Jacobs or whoever.  Colville looked to be decent when he first joined us but he has had limited game time due to Hopkin insisting on having both Millar & McAllister in midfield whenever possible.  A consequence of his scattergun approach to building a balanced squad (and failing to do so).

You could simply swap Jacobs and McAlister’s names and all of the above would be equally plausible. There’s no obvious weak player from three mediocre performances so far, which does not bode well for the only one in the prime of his career and who won’t be safely retired from first team action from May.

MacKinnon's apparently "snubbed Morton's interest".

Good. The last thing we needed was a 4th defensive midfielder, especially in his mid 30s and lacking match fitness.

He might have been more aggressive but I doubt he would have improved us all that much.

Much rather money is spent on a CB and/or striker.

Ray McKinnon bumping his gums about how good his management record is, citing leaving Morton "top of the league" as part of his justification.

Aye, Ray, but that was after just 3 games - a draw Queen of the South, a win against Alloa and - the only noteworthy result of his time here - a home win over Ross County. Not surprisingly he doesn't mention a dismal showing in our League Cup section, or the fact that he got Falkirk papped out of all the cups at the first time of asking - he must have some kind of record in losing so many cup games in one season.

All that, plus winning less than half the league games played by the time Falkirk punted him, despite having far and away the most expensive team in that division. Talk about being economical with the truth.......

You should go into politics, Ray, where that kind of whataboutery goes down well and you only need to get a meaningful result once every few years.

Jacobs has never been anything like as bad as vt makes out,and it’s not the  player’s fault that he’s been almost always been played out of his preferred position by Hopkin. Moving him into a more central role today after Millar tweaked a hamstring might well have been the key point of the whole game as Morton were pretty much in control from then on. I hope that Hopkin takes note when it comes to future selections and positioning.

Jacobs had a fine game  - not that vt will acknowledge that, of course - and scored two goals. More importantly, the team played well in that second half and were well worth the win. It wasn’t particularly pretty but for a change the organisation matched the effort and if we can play like that more consistently then we’ll be okay against the majority of teams in this league.

.......it’s still a big “if”, though.

I'm willing to give Jacobs the benefit of the doubt when he plays right back or right wing back as it's not his position. That doesn't mean he's not been entirely missing this season in midfield tho'. It's not that he's anything as bad as anyone makes out: he's genuinely been worse. For someone who's supposed to be holding the midfield together as a defensive unit and breaking up attacks he just... doesn't. He rarely makes tackles and he is constantly losing his man. We've conceded far too many goals this season from shots at the edge of the box or midfielders running through without being picked up and, when you look for him, Jacobs has been drawn out to the flanks and left spaces in the position he's supposed to be occupying.

Folk are always having a go at McAllister for pointing and shouting but, more often than not, he's pointing and shouting at Jacobs who, once again, has been dragged away from his holding role and Jim's had to fall back deeper to make up for it and it lets teams play in front of us and our line of engagement isn't far up enough for the pressing system Hopkin wants.

It's not entirely Jacob's fault and, to be fair, I don't listen to the team talks so maybe he's getting shit instruction but he's been grossly disappointing. He's been no better than Marco Maisano and his long range shooting is on a par as well.

Wouldn't mind Todd, scores a few goals and gives us a better option than Orsi tbh.

Could see Tidser go to Dee in a swap deal with Falkirk though?

No thanks he showed all the ambition of wet paint by joining league 1 Falkirk and by all accounts so far they say he is a waste of a wage, keep him or punt him, just not too us

We've got about 10 central midfielders as it is.
