We may have tried keep him but by all accounts it was a heavily reduced contract as a squad player

By all made up wishful Ayr fan accounts.

Other accounts state that Bullen has missed out on one of his top retention targets and that his plans for next season are now in utter chaos. *

* also made up but just as credible.

Aye our manager was desperate to keep someone who had barely played under him once we finished our January recruitment.

That all adds up perfectly in your head but I’m afraid it’s far more likely, and true, that Muirhead and Baird would’ve been backup players next season and didn’t want to hang around.

Sean McGinty is a much better defender than Jack Baird. Enjoy him.

We have watched both regularly and know this is very far from the truth.

Put an experienced and better centre back beside Baird and he'll be fine, but if we don't he'll be a bombscare, as he was for much of his previous spell here while still being better than McGinty, McLean and Grant. That's the difference between Baird being part of good teams this level, like when he was playing beside Gary McKenzie or Harry Davis at St Mirren, and being part of crap teams like when he was playing beside Sean McGinty at Morton & Ayr or Gregor Buchanan at St Mirren.

Entirely possible Baird could be a success after flopping at Ayr. Just like how McGinty has been a success at Ayr after flopping at Morton. And by success I mean semi-competent and one level above being dug meat.

McGinty and Baird are both dung. If we had to sign one I'd rather it was Baird based on both their time at Morton but that's no ringing endorsement.

If it's a direct replacement for McLean being finally convinced to retire/drop a couple of levels to keep playing then it would be an upgrade. If it is to replace McEntee while McLean signs on again then that's not great at all.

Bairds first season was bad and continued bad when both he and McGinty were a partnership.  Bullen came in and went with Muirhead and McGinty and our goals conceded in first 18 games to second 18 halved.  McGinty looked a lot more capable beside Muirhead, Baird always seemed to be chasing his man back, very much like Fjortoft.  We were always looking to upgrade CB and with McGinty having triggered a contract extension, Baird was always going to be offered redcued game time/terms.

How do you know that Baird was offered reduced terms? If Bullen didn't rate him, surely he would have just released him?

Baird still played in 11 games since he came in ( McGinty and Muirhead played 18) so he was still involved.

Its clear Ayr fans dont rate him, fair enough but he was fine for us so hopefully he can get back to that, similar to what McGinty appears to be doing with you lot after being dreadful for us and you lot in the first half of the season.

Bullen spoke a lot about squad continuity and not wanting to have to overhaul everything in one go. I’m fairly certain that our journo for the club alluded to a couple of players being offered reduced terms to stay about and be there as back up. Whatever Bullen’s intentions were with him, the vast majority of Ayr fans are glad to see the back of him (and Muirhead for that matter).

11 games seems like a lot tbh but a few of them were before we could sort out the midfield and had to keep playing Muirhead in there. Once Muirhead went back to centre back, Baird was limited to sub appearances and was drafted in for the last two games due to injury elsewhere.

He hardly played a game after Ben Dempsey came in late January and Muirhead got put back to center back, he started the last two games only because Houston was injured and Muirhead was put at RB, seams a good guy hope he gets his career back on track but there is no doubt he was rubbish for us.

Fellow Morton supporters,

Triggered by watching some travel to southern Spain this week - do you think we will ever see the club play a game outwith Scotland again?

What are our routes to doing this?

a. Finishing sufficiently high in the league (generally 4th - 5th) to qualify for Europe. Not a prospect at all at present, but when the likes of Kilmarnock, Motherwell and even Rose County have achieved this or threatened to, then this shouldn’t be such a remote possibility.

b. Scottish Cup - winners qualify for Europe of course, but I’m not if sure runners-up still take the place of the winner should the winner have qualified by virtue of their league position. If so, chances obviously increase (see Ayr United, QotS & Falkirk as examples of runners-up this millennium l) but in any event, such a run would likely be a once-in-a-lifetime thing for us, and then would be dependent on your opponent in the final.

c. Challenge Cup - Welsh, Irish & English sides not present this past season and unclear if we now return to an all-Scottish tournament permanently. While the number of non-Scottish teams were limited and we never drew one to date, over time the chances are we would have and this would represent our best hope of a competitive game “overseas” at present.

d. Friendly - Long-gone are the days of Morton going abroad for pre-season.  Given this, a very tight budget and a general decrease in pre-season friendlies (in any setting) since the reform of the League Cup, this route is also unlikely though not impossible.

So are we destined to see only matches played within Scotland’s borders, or are you more optimistic that we too will get to experience following our club abroad - even if only at a modest scale?

M74 southbound is the easiest.  👍
