Standing for Election

Unlucky bud

Thanks. I have the opportunity to be cooped into another seat by the looks of it, but would rather win an election to get there. Enjoyed the experience and the campaigning.

Postal vote shenanigans!!

I had someone phone me complaining that they had voted before they got my leaflet which was a bit annoying as they said they would have voted me.

The guy I was up against got 10'500 votes for Labour in the Charnwood constituency in 2010 so probably a more effective campaigner than me.

TBH, judging by the posting styles on here, there isn't a single poster on this forum who should be considering standing for election.

Honestly there isn't a single grain of self awareness anywhere.

I'm pretty sure public service isn't crying out for a bunch of deluded forum trolls to help out.

That is an utterly pathetic response.
Grow up and try debating like an adult.

You have got to be the least self aware person on this entire board. Too many wains have egged your windaes over the years imo.

He's no been the same since getting utterly roasted after the graduates leaving Scotland thing.

True that. It does seem that that was the tipping point. He's been a bit "Michael Douglas in Falling Down" ever since.

Maybe you shouldn't judge by posting style on a football forum then.

Yup

Oaksoft is speaking shite as per

Eta: well since he got rattled by ad lib having the audacity to stand

The more people standing the better I say. Hate the attitude that only certain types of people should stand for election.

I got quite a bit of 'what have you done' and 'I don't know who you are' from existing councillors. One especially seemed particularly bothered that I didn't socialise in the same circles as her. Most of Berwick's councillors are in position from being cooped on or because nobody stood against them ffs!

I came fairly close in probably the most difficult ward in the town for me (highest income, second homes, people who have moved into the town), so I'm hoping it persuades as many people who care about the town as possible, whatever their background to stand at the full elections so that these 'typical' councillors have to work for their vote.

  • 2 weeks later...

Stood as Council candidate and in Scottish elections many moons ago.

Lost both times but as I never stood a chance of winning it wasn't much of a surprise.

Highlight of my electioneering was enraging George Foulkes at a hustings

Best local politician I've ever met is a guy called Jim Bollan, he's the only elected Socialist in Britain ifirc. I may not always agree on every policy but he's a really hard working guy who goes out of his way for his constituents. He turned up at the retirement of a long standing police staff member despite all the labour ones being too busy etc which I thought was very decent.

He's been a councillor for donkeys years.

Sure he started out in the CPGB (Communist Party of Great Britain).

I've done it. Won every round till the last two, I'm quite proud of that considering the area I worked solidly voted no last year and it's a labour stronghold to this day.

It's also hard work for practically no pay - £16k for a councillor.

Unless of course your a Glasgow Labour councillor and a Director of a arms length outfit, maybe Glasgow Life (Parks & Museums) or Cordia (Social Work) or how about City Building.

Maybe £50,000 or £100,000 plus your £16,0000.

With a pay off???

I'm not interested in the money, never was and never will be.

I wanted to help the people where I was standing in (and my wife is from). It is a cliche but the financial aspect or some deluded aspect of power never entered my head although it is bizarre when you are canvassing and you introduce yourself as the actual candidate. I just genuinely thought I could do good.

As the few on here would probably testify, I'm not really suited for local politics as I'm quite a positive guy and don't really have that ruthless streak in me that most politicians have.
