The Famous Glasgow Rangers vs Motherwell

Recommended Posts

Quick take on last night. After a couple of encouraging performances, QoTS Away and Hibs at home we were back to the struggles we have endured for most of the season and Motherwell punished us for it.

Happy to let us have most of the possession in the first 20-30mins, they never looked in trouble though. First goal unlucky perhaps, 2nd goal awful defending, 3rd goal, cracking break and finish. Last 20-15 something to cheer about at last, Walsh and Ferguson starting a late run at them, we deserved a goal and perhaps another to make it really interesting on Sunday.

No complaints at all we were well beaten, but there’s still a chance, let’s throw absolutely everything and anything we’ve got left into the 2nd leg! Mon The Gers

I'm not that comfy with the assumption that Motherwell are likely to score freely again.

Last night was unusual. Motherwell did well, but their opener was against the run of play and of course was very quickly followed by another.

Indeed, all three came within about a twenty minute spell of play, but Rangers finished strongly.

I don't necessarily think Motherwell will score as high a proportion of their chances on Sunday, but I suspect they'll need at least one goal.

Last night was great, but I'm still worried about Sunday and will be surprised if anything like last night is replicated.

Motherwell dominated the game until near the end. Only then did Sevco start to dominate and force lots of corners. Sevco have been woefully wasteful all season up front. Their conversion rate to chances made has been awful.

Not to be contrary and I get what you're saying but our recent home record (Thistle dead rubber aside) shows we've got a pretty decent conversion rate. We've gone from creating absolutely nothing during December & January to creating a reasonable number of chances per game.

vs ICT: 2-1 Shots: 14, On target: 4, Goals: 2

Not saying we will or won't score on Sunday but put in context outwith the last game of the season vs Thistle where we put out a reserve XI the last game we failed to score at home was vs Dundee on 21st Feb, which coincidentally was the last home game we lost.

Yes, fair enough.

I'm a worrier though.

Let's give credit to Baraclough and Motherwell. Team selection, formation, tactics and ability to hit on the counter in such an effective way deserves top plaudits. Therefore they thoroughly deserved to win the match.

As I've said in earlier posts McCalls deserves the same plaudits for the matches against QOS and Hibs. His substitutions at vital stages of the games and the changes to the formation that came with them were spot on.

What disappointed me is that I expect a Rangers manager to see 'things' before fans and as I I watched Rangers impressive start change around the 15 minute mark when Motherwell started to look extremely dangerous on the counter attack and it was no surprise when they scored even tho it was a deflection. It was another counter attack that brought the foul that led to the 2nd goal. But prior to the 26 min goal I was of the opinion to close up shop a bit more. It was obvious!!! As a previous poster said Rangers weren't as open v QOS or Hibs so why play this way v Motherwell? Surely at ht the team talk was to keep it tight. Definitely don't lose the 3rd goal! Incredibly less than 2 mins Rangers left exposed again!

Rangers did look more dangerous with the introduction of Walsh and Ferguson and in fact could have easily scored a couple in the last 15 mins. But remember they got space because Motherwell had well and truly parked the bus and rightly so. Boyd's header was a unacceptable miss. ( Laws effort in the first half was also a disappointing miss)

Baraclough got it so right and McCall got it so wrong.

I think somehow McCall forgot that Rangers scrapped through both of the 2 previous ties and at times out passed and outplayed. Why he thought Rangers could play in such an open offensive manner beggars belief!

Still it is only a 2 goal gap. It's not over yet! It will be interesting. Fans think McCulloch will come in for MCGregor however he may well go with 3 at the back bringing in Smith for wide left and then bring Ferguson on if they need to be more offensive. I don't know how match fit Ferguson is or if there were injuries after last night. Walsh is very promising but is still a light weight and for me is totally an offensive player.

Anyway let's wait and see who's fit! Football is unpredictable as your fixed odds coupon tells you nearly every week. Sunday will be very interesting. I don't believe any of the teams have 'real'stars therefore formation and tactics will be very important.

As am I. I still have a nagging doubt about Sunday, we're totally capable of simply not turning up. I've seen it as many times at Fir Park where there's a bit of expectation on us.

I think there is little doubt that both teams will turn up! This was always going to be some match. A final to play in the premier. I hope the match is not ruined by a sending off!

Maybe Baraclough is some kind of football genius and motherwells poor form was some kind of tactical master plan for them to steamroller to the title next year.

It might happen....

The excuses and whining has started as expected.

I keep hearing "it's better if we don't go up" and "it's the Premiership's loss" and "I'm glad Hibs didn't go up and we won't go up, so they won't get their 'big' derbies". Also, how they will boycott away games when they do go up and ruin the clubs who all depend on the 'huge' Sevco away support.

Everyone of the Sevco hoards comes out with the same verbal bull. It's like they have been issued with a sheet full of excuses to use.

MT you're still under the impression that Rang2rs are Rangers. Would you expect QOTS to go to Fir Park and turn round a 3-1 defeat?

I'm not.

In fact I said during the first jittery twenty minutes of our play-off game at Ibrox that we were guilty of treating them that way.

Of course I wouldn't "expect" Queens to reverse a 3-1 deficit at Fir Park, but I'd have faint hope that we could.

Rangers are a bit better than Queens though and their players will be on big bonuses to do it. I still don't "expect" Rangers to win here, but I know that they might and I'm concerned about it.

Beating ICT and Hamilton are no mean feats. Should be an 'open and shut' game and the door is closed to thousands of slavering bigots visiting the top flight's grounds for another season.

Btw, don't know why some Hibees want Sevco to win. Hibs horsed this lot - bar the capitulations in the 'crunch' games - so why the fear? I can't see Sevco being stronger next season.

Oh....

WITH Gers’ biggest game of the season looming large, the players were left stunned yesterday when told that fitness coach Jim Henry had gone on HOLIDAY.

They were expecting him to put them through their paces at Murray Park ahead of tomorrow’s crunch clash.

But the first-team squad were amazed to find out Henry has already finished up for the season as he’d booked a trip abroad.
