Ayr United, what now 2015-16

Recommended Posts

Murphy will be playing a more holding midfield role, so we will still be looking for at least 1 if not 2 defenders. One of my mates said he met McKenna in Magaluf last week and he is not sure if he will be coming back on loan, looks like it's up to McInness and if he has him in mind for the first team squad at Aberdeen.

When did McCall say that Murphy would be playing in midfield? Seen it quoted a few times. Seems like a pretty terrible idea on the face of it.

Better idea than him shithousing in defence again though.

Murphy is a natural midfielder and played there with Carlisle. His distribution from defence is first class so he would do a good job in midfield.

That doesn't mean he's still suited to playing in midfield. His distribution is impressive, but put him in a congested midfield at this level and he won't get the time on the ball to be spraying passes everywhere. Even then, being a good passer of the ball alone isn't enough to be a capable holding midfielder (or any kind of midfielder). He clearly doesn't have the legs to be able to cover a lot of ground and he's far too slow to run around breaking up attacks. We already have Ross Docherty who can do everything required of a holding midfielder more than adequately, so I really don't see the point in Murphy being in there as well. Keeping him at the back means he should have the time to pick a pass and, while I'm not completely sold on Murphy defensively, having McLaughlan next to him to do the heavy lifting would give the team quite a nice balance.

Alistair Sargeant is having a Twitter meltdown tonight. Apparently McKenna is shite and Murphy should be nowhere near midfield. Throwing his toys out pram when VoR disagrees with him!!!!

Not for the first time. Had a breakdown when Devlin re-signed.

Peter Murphy could be running the show at the base of Ayr's midfield this season. Potentially the classiest player in League One

@VoiceAyr has to play at the back. We're well served in midfield, need him at the back where he can see everything. He should have been capt

@AllyS_1988 Disagree. Would move him to base of midfield and have him running games. His assurance on ball is unrivalled at this level

@VoiceAyr ... would still put the ball out the park more often than they found his feet. Midfields at this level need animals

@AllyS_1988 McKenna is a footballer. McLaughlin will do the dirty stuff. Murphy in midfield will open up so much of the pitch. No brainer
