He's avoided detection among the scale of the corruption and had been "last man standing". The external criminals were still the ones with the power, but we're less coordinated without Hunter. The whole point of the finish and the overarching message was that there wasn't some big, bad super genius criminal mastermind orchestrating the whole thing from the inside, but rather that the system itself - that allows greedy, incompetent idiots like Buckells, Higgins, etc to fall upwards, rise to positions of prominence, raise others to the same (Dott, Pilkington, etc), and sweep everything under the carpet thereafter - is the real villain. Buckells was shitting himself in the cell when Lakewell got murdered because he was terrified. He wasn't some hardened criminal, his blithering idiot persona wasn't a front, he wasn't all of a sudden going to turn in to a cocky psycho in the interview room because now he was caught, he was just a greedy doofus that was in the right place at the right time with other corrupt police who also got used by the OCG, and then cast aside when they were no longer useful ala Marcus Thurwell. The fact he was undone by a consistent spelling error is proof enough of this. It's the equivalent of current state of the people in cabinet positions at Westminster, just with police as opposed to politicians. Appreciate a lot of people wanted a nice clean finish with everything wrapped up in a bow, and some explosive twist to see everything out, but I'm glad they didn't go that way. Real life isn't like that, and whilst there were certainly hollywood esque moments throughout the life of the programme (Kate going full rambo and shooting a car from 6 miles being particularly ridiculous) it was generally a show that came down on the side of realism. Steve reluctantly getting help for his painkiller addiction isn't as explosive as him going on a wild suicide mission because he might get taken off active duty, but it is a lot more realistic. Carmichael not being bent, but rather just being a pragmatic careerist isn't that exciting, but it is a lot more realistic. Four people (Hastings, Kate, Steve and Chloe) not managing to take down an entire corrupt system and life going on as it always does isn't going to give you that warm satisfied feeling, but it is a lot more realistic. I liked that it was also consistent. Just as with the finish to the first series where Tony Gates evidence on Tommy Hunter was brushed under the carpet, same has happened with them trying to sideline Buckells testimony. The system keeps on going. Like the war on drugs, trying to take down organised crime and stop corruption is an unwinnable fight. It certainly wasn't perfect, but I didn't hate it, and with not providing updates on Kate, Steve or Ted, they've left it open enough that they can bring it back for another series if they want, although I hope they don't. The one negative for me throughout the season was Hastings becoming a bit of a parody of himself, getting all the big phrases in whenever possible, and the penultimate speech to Carmichael was a bit cringe. Saved it with his admission about his role in Corbett's death though. There is potential for a 7th series but the way it was all tied up and putting the photos of all the previous bent coppers in the box suggests that's it folks. There are parts that are for dramatic effect and to maintain the story. You just have to accept that. funky_nomad Posted May 3, 2021 Share Posted May 3, 2021 It felt to me like the ending was rushed - Mercurio has spoken about how ne got a call about this series being scheduled much earlier than expected and that they were still in post-production pretty much right up to the wire. No way they'd not have taken the time to dig into the forged prison release statement in earlier series, for instance. Was he not still doing his job to organise everything while still in his cell? I’m sure they found a laptop hidden there. He was also the last link for the OCG to get the orders through to the police officers. They didn't even deliver that well though, I'd be satisfied with some thing that ended with "we're never gonna beat the system" type stuff if they delivered it correctly.
