It never crossed my mind that it was part of the plot, just looked like incompetent portrayal of first aid although I'm no expert.

There was another dodgy scene where, after Hargreaves was shot and Kate rushed out, the camera focused just a second too long on a policeman that was still in the room and standing by a computer.

I both hate and love this show.

I do. He was a total nobody in the context of the show. Killing him off makes no difference. It was practically forgotten about minutes later in that very episode too.
