League Vacancies

I wonder with the uni teams is the very fact they are uni's making the paperwork harder to complete? I.e they are not completely separate football clubs meaning it could maybe make things like finances hard to separate from the rest of the organisation.

Just a thought.

Unfortunately it is more likely to be less, iif BSC don't get their license by May.

No great loss, IMO - said from the start they shouldn't have been in & no surprise they've been unable to get their act together considering some of the off field antics.

The goings on at Benburb suggest however an interesting replacement in the wings, as instead of following the Junior tradition of spunking a massive cash windfall on buying players & thinking "hard standings" with one part covered somehow qualifies as state of the art in the 21st century, they instead have invested in 4G & this:

It's to be at least 450 seats plus roofed. They would be well on their way to getting their licence once the current work is finished, & it would be naiive of anyone to dismiss this is their plan - they've been in the doldrums in the Juniors for decades & are dead certs to be relegated to the bottom tier next summer.

They've nothing left to lose in a set up where the rich man will remain at his house & the poor man at his gate, at least in the LL there's the prospect of regular three figure gates & perhaps more with a promising Scottish Cup draw against some top club having to restart in the bottom tier after undergoing a liquidation event (not an unlikely occurence anymore)!

Speaking of Ashfield (where BSC were originally going to bunk in), with the news they will now be rent free & Saracans Park being earmarked for improvements by the new owners, they could be a side bet to chuck their hands in the ring too, doing even worse than Benburb are doing now.

BSC Glasgow were a bit of a left field applicant last year as perhaps were Edin Uni (although Edin Uni Sports Association don't seem short of cash and now have a very nice ground) so it maybe that there are clubs us Easterners haven't heard of are thinking of applying.

Are there any ambitious youth/amateur teams out west?

On this side of the country Easthouses Lily might have a shot at applying- they've done a lot of work to their ground and tried putting in new dressing rooms (which were vandalised by anti-social scum elements unfortunately).

Care to elaborate on "off field antics"?

Think it revolves around the perception that the LL needs more teams in the west to succeed in the years ahead more than a regional rivalry. It looks like Barry Ferguson is doing his best to add Clyde to the mix for next season and that would probably be the quickest way to a strong presence in the Glasgow area. Beyond the other names mentioned, such as Rossvale, when it comes to ambitious youth/amateur clubs, Cumbernauld Colts are probably worth a mention, because they hold the lease on Broadwood and have talked about starting an adult level team in the recent past.

Local papers in the Borders discussing the new round of vacancies, and the possibility of Coldstream and Duns applying.

http://www.bordertelegraph.com/sport/roundup/articles/2015/01/14/521157-lowland-league-looks-to-expand/

http://www.berwick-advertiser.co.uk/sport/football/east-of-scotland/lowland-league-seeking-applications-1-3658558

Worth saying that a bit of the Border Telegraph article must be wrong: there could be 3 vacancies if LL champion is promoted and a northerly club relegated, but by the very same token a southerly club could be relegated and HL champion promoted, potentially leaving only 1 vacancy. So, there can't be a minimum of 2 spaces.

Then they would have 2 vacancies.

Someone can correct my logic if it's wrong: but if all 14 existing clubs get licensed, then there will be 1 vacancy (HL winner up + southerly SPFL2 club down); 2 vacancies (LL winner up + southerly SPFL2 club down / HL winner up + northerly SPFL2 club down / SPFL2 club survives); or 3 vacancies (LL winner up + northerly SPFL2 club down).

If any existing club fails to get licensed, and is then demoted, increase the numbers by 1.

Only aspect still unclear - AFAICS - is whether the bottom club can go into the vacancy process if EOS or SOS champion is promoted.

Those would be the 3 scenarios, I think.

Would love Duns to be in the Lowland league. Brand new pitch and facilities as well. Heres hoping!

I think both Coldstream and Duns, alongside their Scottish Cup motivations, have ambitions of establishing LL football in the eastern Borders.

Berwickshire is 1 of only 5 mainland counties without a club in the "professional game" levels, and has little rugby presence to speak of.

(Other 4 being neighbouring Roxburghshire; the well-surrounded Kincardine and Kinross; and remote Argyllshire).

To make a proper go of it could well require a broader recruitment of players from Northumberland and the Lothians, IMO.

Coldstream and Duns have both came a long way in recent times with their grounds, but joining the LL would be a big mistake IMO. Borders football has never been so fucked up. Scottish Cup yes, LL a no for me

Duns would be preferable perhaps from having a bit more of a population base to work from (& being the home of the Duns Ba' game there's some historical links to the earliest incantations of football, so an angle of hype for the LL), but really it's more clubs from Glasgow & surrounding areas they need to draw in more overall interest, rather than having a Berwickshire representative for the sake of it.
