Top 3 Scottish League Club Names

Recommended Posts

Civil Service Strollers rolls off the tongue quite nicely.

Partick Thistle - biased as I am - is a pretty nice sounding name.

Heart of Midlothian is a cracking name.

On something of a tangent - what about nicknames for sides? I quite like Ayr's (the honest men) and Queen of the South (the Doonhamers)

Another from Burns - "Auld Ayr, wham ne'er a town surpasses, For honest men and bonnie lasses".

Disclaimer - yes, I'm a Burns fan...

Old club named Ayr Parkhouse. Edinburgh club St. Bernard's. And were Meadowbank Thistle the only team named after a stadium?

Was that also the area of edinburgh they were from?

They were a works team called Ferranti Thistle who unbelievably were chosen to join the league ahead of all the Highland League clubs and Gala, Annan etc back in the early 70's. Something about the traveling distance being too much if one of them was selected. They were made to change their name on joining the league set up.

So you see, Scottish football has a historical connection with poor administration and running of the game, it's not just a recent thing!

Ferranti took the name Meadowbank on relocation to the stadium - although obviously it took its name from the area it was built it... Ferranti's works were not in that area, and they used City Park (originally home to Edinburgh City and latterly Hibs B, Craigroyston and finally Spartans) - which is north of Ferry Road.

Anent Chryston Oddfellows; the Oddfellows were a quasi masonic charitable society.

The odd Oddfellows Hall in Forrest Road, Edinburgh is now a wanky pub.

Apparently the last lodge in Scotland is in Newburgh.

I'm now just off to revive Scottish Stamping and Engineering Athletic as a violent amateur team ..

England also had teams called Church and Street.

Yeh there was a team in the early rounds of the FA cup called Penistone Church from South Yorkshire.

The Church in the club name isn’t enough to hide the fact that there’s also a penis in there.

3. Queen Of the South. This would have been higher as it's a great name, but the story of how it got it's name is too much of a disappointment. Basically some stiff from the tourist board in the 1800's trying to promote the town, decided they'd call themselves the Queen Of the South. It's a bit like a kid going into school and telling his classmates his new nickname is going to be Shagger or Ace.

I'd thought it was coined by a bloke called Dunbar who was running for some political office in the town.

Either way, it's a brilliant name which I'm unjustifiably proud of.  It could only really be improved by the addition of a Catch-my-Pal suffix.

Ayr v Falkirk, tomorrow night’s SC Quarter Final, is the Burns derby.  Both getting their nickname from Rabbie Burns poems.

Ayr as you say, and ‘Better meddle wi' the de'il than the Bairns o' Fa'kirk

I like Burntisland Shipyard.

The mental image I get when I hear that name is like a scene from Peaky Blinders.

Also like Kirkintilloch Rob Roy( sound like a group of mad outlaws) and Craigmark Burntonians.

No idea what a “ Burntonian” is. So that stands out for me.
