Rovers Review 2014 (part 1 jan - jun)

Recommended Posts

2014 has been...eh...well...different..

A potted version of events. Feel free to fill in any blanks.

January

Year gets off to a poor start with an away defeat at Galabank.

"Pay What You Can" creates a bit of a stir within the media and brings a season high attendance to Cliftonhill.

Jan ends on another low note with a heavy home defeat to a CC inspired Berwick.

February

League form continues to be erratic with 2 draws, 1 win and 1 defeat.

The cup proves a welcome distraction however with a decent 2-0 5th round win over league 1 Stenny.

Rovers reach qtr finals for first time in 80 years and are rewarded with an away tie at Ibrox.

March

Scenes at Ibrox as Ciaran Donnelly opens the scoring against Rangers. Dogged defending by Rovers is eventually undone by a ridiculous refereeing decision. Rovers secure a 1-1 draw and heads held high but what might have been...

Lose the replay but win friends by donating £10k from cup takings to kids charity.

Bizarre goings-on in between the cup ties in the league game against QP when Rovers field a weakened second string side and lose heavily. Meanwhile manager James Ward is apparently on his stag weekend in Spain. You couldn't make it up.

Rovers stumble out of promotion playoff race.

April

Disastrous month in April sees Rovers lose 3 on the bounce including an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at the Broadwood.

James Ward awarded a new contract. Go figure !

May

An interesting but fruitless season ends with a home win over QP.

Changes start to the squad with fans favourite Barry Russell among the casualties of War(dy)

June

Cup cash starts to get splashed. Rovers make statement of intent bringing back talisman John Gemmell for a 3rd spell at Cliftonhill.

Chairman John Devlin launches a radical "pay what you can" season ticket deal apparently selling 600 tickets in 4 weeks.

He then sacks manager James Ward only 6 weeks after renewing his contract. Go figure again !

Rookie boss Darren Young and ex Airdrie legend Sandy Clark take over.

A controversial end to an unusual and unforgettable 6 months for Rovers.

Part 2 July - Dec to follow
