Google tells me Russian GDP per capita and average wages are about 3 times higher than that of Ukraine. There are very few examples of modern democratic countries seceding from larger democratic nations, so as a rhetorical question is doesn't work very well. Of course there are lots of small countries similar to us that do well, there is no way of telling whether they might have done just as well or better in a collective of neighbouring countries. To make the case for independence you shouldn't promise we'll be better off, there's no sure way of telling, you just have to make the case strong enough that it's impossible for the unionists to prove that you'll be worse off.

I agree...it would be great to build a water tight case. But we can't<_<

The reason.....statistics.....or lack of.

At present there is neither the political will or physical capabilty to differentiate Scottish trade from that of UK or the variable forms of taxation that are applied to the Scottish population and business.

What we have are GERS which freely admit to being a best estimate.....but what is that?

GERS also fails to take into account the multiplier effect as espoused by prof Richard Murphy and other leading statisticians. As such GERS likely undervalues Scottish tax take and overvalues that of London and the South East by a considerable amount.

We are therefore left in a position where we can never accurately measure Scotlands wealth until Holyrood has full fiscal and taxation control.

What we can say is that in terms of GDP we are similar to other small West European countries.

Given very few of them have the vast array of resource Scotland has, I think it non controversial to say that we are vastly underachieving in union.

Thanks...corrected....although it would be interesting to know the final destination of goods "exported" to the rUK....our biggest baddest trading partner8)

Yes, how are goods passed to an English firm to organise export counted? Geography of course explains most import export figures around the world so you'd expect a large proportion of our trade to be with England and Ireland, but I was a bit surprised to see we export more to the rest of the world than to the EU. But that trade is nearly all through EU arranged trade deals which might explain a bit. The answer of course will be to use our position at the top table to argue strongly for a generous free trade offer to the rUK from the EU.

Can't wait to see how broken Kinky gets when the union dies.

If one thing keeps me going politically, it is undoubtedly the thought of P&B on the morning after a Yes vote.

Given that the two great countries of Scotland and England have had a monarchical twinning since 1603  and given that I smoke about 25 grammes of roll-ups a day I am absolutely certain that our glorious Union will live long after me.  God save the Queen.

I'm not sure how broken Kincy would be. His entire schtick on here is to be an attention seeking arsehole, so taking anything he says seriously is probably a bad idea. Anyone who comes away with the BJK stuff isn't worth paying attention to.

I never have and you do.

Come to think of it, Scotland and Ireland could become quite an effective force in the EU, gathering up support from other small nations to moderate the power of the big boys. And maybe arrange for some red cross parcels to be sent to Wales and Cornwall.

Tbh I just want to get an EU grant to build a huge soundsystem on the A1 at the border blasting 2 Unlimited on repeat forever.

Is that before or after we build the anti refugee wall.

I would anticipate lots of poor midland and Northern serfs desperate to escape a right wing oligarchy stripping them of their ever decreasing meagre wealth.

We must ensure a rigorous but fair assylum process.8)

He got invited onto that new Scottish debate show that is yet to air also. I wonder if they are frantically re-editing his bits out as we speak emoji3.png

It was a pilot so they might not show it anyway, especially now.

He is, aye.  Over the years the Herald has had some outstanding writers on the political left; currently Kevin McKenna, Iain McWhirter and David Pratt, and of course the late, lamented and peerless Ian Bell.

To balance things up and presumably shore up sales in leafy areas they have employed David Torrance, Andrew McKie, the erstwhile Michael Fry and of course Smith.

It would be easier getting a comb thro Helen Liddell's hair that to make a case for that latter quartet.

The thing is that McKie and Fry, for example, are full of nonsense but have a bit of wit and intellect about them, but Smith absolutely does not.
